Remixing another NiN song is not creating something new.

Nor is a remix of a remix.

who's talking about remixes or remakes of shitty NIN songs?

Oh, it's just you mentioned weird/experimental music in the 2000's and I just assumed I could throw shitty remixes and "dubstep" copy and pastes of older music into your defined genre.

I don't listen to this:

And think oh wow that's so cutting edge it's incredible.

*nb: the above isn't a remix of NiN, but if you heard such music in a club you can bet those there would say how influential the DJ is when in reality he has done fuck all in terms of "creating" music.

you're such a DUMBIE, JEESH!

i wasnt talking about dubstep at all, for one, but then again the examples and impression you cite of it is so misguided i cant even be fucking bothered to retort properly and explain to you just how egregious your entire existence is. dubstep is not pop-remixes. dubstep 'producers' arent credited as being influential for their DJ'ing. electronic producing and DJ'ing are very different things, wiseass. for 5 years dubstep hasnt been even remotely accessible to mainstream audiences. it's like me saying metal music sucks and is unoriginal and then citing nickelback. just. no.

the worst thing is that you say it all with such a smarmy know-it-all tone, when really your 'knowledge' of electronic music, specifically dub/dancehall/dubstep, is pretty much primordial at best.

jesus just re-reading your post and realizing that your mental logic went from "weird/experimental" therefore = "dubstep"... defies belief. hahaha.

Never said it was anywhere near your blogosphere level of knowledge, did I?

Experimental music of the 2000's = dubstep... Unless you want to tell me dubstep has been around since before then.

yes, dubstep has been around since before 2000. nuff said.

also, dubstep is nowhere fucking near 'experimental'. what the fuck are you on? ryoji ikeda. that's experimental. autechre's quaristice. that's experimental. fennesz, he's experimental. an evolution of garage/2-step/dub into south-london/bristolian 'dubstep' is not experimental. it's a very conventional genre, as far as electronic music goes. same tempo, rhythms, characteristics... damn, any genre that you can mix easily into a 2 hour set by it's very construct isn't 'experimental'.

and yeah, nice dig with the blogosphere-knowledge comment. i don't read music blogs, mainly because they're full of /facepalm people like you that somehow think they're qualified to talk about music they have superficial knowledge of.

fyi here is some 'experimental' electronic. it's an experiment for a reason. it's not dubstep.

I was talking about real music Uzi, not electronic shit that any nOOb with a PC can make with Dance E-Jay

Or maybe you refer to Lady Gaga and his/her likes that flooded the last decade as groundbreaking and impactive?

And stop calling people retards because they don't agree with you!

you are a MASSIVE SCANDINAVIAN DUMBIE, JEESH!

'real' music... lol. aphex twin has more musical talent in his little pinkie than your average 4 piece band. if you dont understand the process of making music using trackers and analogue synthesis, dont fucking comment. period. you get called a retard when you talk shit and act like you know what you're talking about, when you dont. just dont do it.

and wtf does lady gaga and pop production have to do with ANYTHING

it's named after his stillborn twin. afx is richard d. james. one guy. making music that surpasses the talent of an orchestra of musicians.

p.s. your shitty indie bands and generic folk-twee-bullshit and cliche-chug-chug-metal bands can't do this. nor can lady gaga.

real electronic 'experimental' music.

so much for any moron with dance e-jay... guess using trackers and multiple rendering methods to create music written to algorithms is easy.

i apologize Uzique, i have some early aphex twin. the quote reminded me of

"what, they changed their name?"

that wasn't even the discussion...

i was putting forward what constitutes 'experimental' music, after aussie belittled my statement that there has been serious pushing-of-the-envelope in the last 10 years. his contention that dubstep is nothing more than "DJ remixes" was wrong on many levels. we're not discussing taste or opinion. i was highlighting the serious flaws in a) his definition/understanding of 'dubstep' and 'experimental' and b) the level of progression that has existed in electronic music in the last 10 years, completely apart from a fairly-predictable progression in the dubstep circles.

Not really. Musical brilliance is musical brilliance, no matter how good you think they are. There is fact, then there is opinion.

Fact. Aphex Twin is one of the greatest electronic musicians of all time.

Opinion. Aphex Twin makes catchy tunes.

Now, that you want to discuss what really is a "great musician" is a different matter. But a generall accepted term is good enough to put them above the rest and make everyone/most people see why they are good. You don't need to like a band to appreciate how good they are.

that video was by some artists similar to aphex twin, called autechre. the video was inspired by an LSD trip.

and yes it is fucking masterful and took months to create.

How can you possibly use the term fact about musical brilliance?

Was the music hard to make? Did the music take months to make? Did it roll a 6 on the dice in its designated music magazine?

Are those factors that decides if the music is genius or not?

I sure enough see the difference between Aphex Twin and Lady Gaga as an example but picking ten albums that "made a difference" is still based on taste ... and preference ...

incidentally, this thread actually got interesting in the last page. good job guyz!

varegg i think in simple terms this thread is trying to depart from total-subjectivity to agree on 10 'common agreement' albums that made some form of 'impact'- culturally, artistically, socially etc. not necessarily just isolating the musical virtuosity or the merits of the album as a complete piece of art, but considering it in wider contextual 'time & place' circumstances, as well as legacy and further influences. some albums do, completely impartial to personal opinion, have an irrefutable 'influence' and lasting-mark on the 2000-2010 period. i think this thread is just trying to establish those, without dwelling necessarily too much on the musicianship or the 'rating' of the songs qualitatively. albums such as 'kid a' by radiohead just captured an entire generation and provided a soundtrack to several years of all of our lives'. that's a decade-defining album. whether or not you particularly like every single song or find it to be the most agreeably perfect piece of music created. it just carried a... 'movement'. captured an 'essence'. i hope this makes sense.

also, lots of the more advanced IDM e.g. aphex, boards, autechre etc. do spend months poring over one single song. it is as i said earlier, much more complicated than a guy simply 'making music on a computer'. the knowledge of music-theory, composition, production, mastering and general virtuosity far excels most traditional instruments. i have played guitar for 9 years now and im fairly confident in all areas of the instrument, but i still find myself baffled at the creative brilliance of so-called 'guys with a laptop'. it's ignorant to deny their talent just because of their chosen medium.

^^ That was kinda my initial point Uzi what you just used a wall of text to describe

There is too much music made in any decade to "zimmer" it down to just 10 albums ... you would never have a list of 10 albums we all could agree on ...

And if all can't agree it will be based on taste and prefs ... I personally like a great variety of different music from Metal to Electronic and Opera etc etc ...

I can very well appriciate good and great music without liking it myself tbh and I don't expect other to like what I like and consider to be the better choice of music ... easy as that ...

Kinda the same discussion we had going in the book club

and again i would refer to Hume to say that semi-objective 'taste' can be quantified and nominated.

top10 is a tough squeeze but i think with enough contributions we will see some consensus.
