I honestly thought HD-DVD would win, mainly because people are already familiar with the term DVD, and the term HD. And so you can't get more simple in getting your point across than HD-DVD. For that reason I thought it would be like people going "blu-wat" when seeing blu-ray and then seeing the familiar DVD letters and going "oh look they got DVD for HD now"

But then maybe I was underestimating the intelligence of most people I guess...

Really though blu-ray has more storage capability so it would be hard cheering on the inferior format. It was 15/30GB (HD-DVD) vs 25/50GB (Blu Ray). Read speed was the same.

Yes, storage of BD disk convinced me it's superior and it was said storage capacity will evolve even more while with HD-DVDs the limit was reached.
