It is 0500 Christmas morning and I am up lighting a fire in the wood burning stove, it is still dark outside and I'm waiting for my kids to wake up. As I sat watching the flames, with a lit Christmas tree full of presents, and the sound for cracking wood and pouring down rain, I pondered my most memorable Christmas as a kid.

It was Christmas 1980 and my dad was in the army. He worked as a criminal investigator. Late on Christmas Eve he was called into the office for a murder that night. He was gone all night and all morning. Of course we were up early in anticipation of opening presents and had no idea dad was gone. When we found out after my mom got up, we waited. We examined all the gifts over and over. I was looking for the gift of the year that year, an Atari 2600. I saw a gift that was the right size and shape but still could not be sure. We waited. The anticipation was growing unbearable. Finally around 1300 Christmas morning dad came home and we attacked. I headed straight for that package and was not disappointed. I played that thing with pride and in disbelief at the technology and graphics that played out in front of me. It was indeed my version of the Red Rider 200 shot action carbine range model air rifle.

In the spirit of Christmas, and remembrance, what is your most memorable childhood Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas

Mine would be when the hospital let our Grandad out from the Cancer ward to spend his last Xmas with us. that was good.

Wow you had it easy, my parents wouldn't buy an Atari.
I did buy my father a hammer one christmas, so he could bash stuff, preferably my mother.

I too have the unenviable job of working the log fire today.

Never had a touching Christmas like that. I think my most memorable one though was when I got a GameCube, heh. My first ever game console. I still remember ripping off the wrapping and seeing the box, in all its purple and white glory, anxiously waiting for everyone to finish with their gifts so I could plug it in to the TV and get to work on beating Luigi's Mansion.

Also, Christmas Story = great movie.

Unfortunately... my ultrareligious parents seem to have missed the point of making Christmas touching, memorable and joyful and are too eager to turn it over to ceremony. So I have good Christmas memories but not great ones like you

Merry Christmas lowing, all.

my most memorable was the first christmas i spent with my wife. we were both working, living in a duplex we could barely afford, and she had her heart set on a mixer. i was able to save and scrimp and get her that mixer, but i couldn't afford the blades that went with it. she was overjoyed, and still has it. she got me a fishing pole, and one of the things we like to do together is go fishing.

Sorry pal, but until you actually open presents, it remains Christmas morning when you are a kid. 5 hours after word, it might as well be July, that is of course, unless you recieved an Atari 2600

Merry Christmas D&STers. Can't say I really have any touching Christmas stories like that, but I love the image of yours. And you're very dedicated getting up so early to light the fire, I assume they're still really young and get up at 6 in order to get to the presents faster?

Today I got up at lunchtime and ate sushi, that's just how I roll.

Merry Christmas folks. I think my most memorable present as a child was Streetfighter II Champion Edition for the Megadrive (Genesis). As a Sega man I had to suffer all the SNES owners glee at having exclusive access to the game and finally that year I could be Ryu to my middle brothers Ken in the comfort of our own home.

my most memorable present was when the GI Bill finally paid me for 3 months of school.  2 days ago.
