If neocons were the more intelligent part of the Republican party, we're in deep, deep shit as a society in general.

I think you need to get past the concept of relating the term to those who hijacked it and relate it back to those it was originally intended for...at least in terms of the OP.

Well, neocon seems to be hard to define anyway.

All I gotta say is...  William F. Buckley and Barry Goldwater are the kind of conservatives that the GOP needs more of.

They would be ostracized within 5 minutes by the current Republican Party. The anti-intellectualism of Bush drove many people away.

And they and their like are the ones described as the original neoconservatives in the OP. I'd say most of the Republicans who were most like them have probably aligned themselves ideologically with the Libertarian Party today, even if they haven't changed their voter registration cards.

Hopefully, the kneejerk to the left was just an adjustment from the far right to bring us back on line...

I doubt it, the entitlement generation who is turning out, to out number the producers and achievers, will not vote for anything that would force them to lift a finger for their own reward. It is easier for them to have govt. steal it for them, in turn the achievers and producers will seek fortunes elsewhere, far away from the leeches, and our country will succumb.

It has happened to Michigan, California, Maryland etc..Liberal states, go figure.

While I would agree, the center right is more commonly represented by Blue Dog Democrats.  There are moderate Republicans as well, but lately, they seem to be getting a lot of shit from GOP leadership.

The Blue Dogs are generally more socially conservative than fiscally conservative. Case in point: Senator Nelson. I would be a Republican if they cared more about being frugal than about keeping gays from getting married
