I've got a 1971 Reliant Rebel so I'll be getting classic car insurance (I'm 18, passed in January '09). It's gonna cost a little over £400 a year, fully comp with 5000 miles. Classic cars do have there draw backs though (mechanically xD).

I would recommend going on your parents insurance as a named driver, just don't crash!!!

Yeah insurance is soooo much cheaper on older model cars, plus there more safer due to the metal their made out of, instead of the plastic there made out of nowadays...

in a way yes... last year we were in my friends 98 ford crown victoria and we got T-Boned, if we were in my 2004 toyota camry I would have probably ended up in the hospital...

Sure as hell isn't true for any modern car, safety cages in those make the body panels purely cosmetic.

Buy the cheapest, lowest insurance group car you can.
Stick it in the garage and take the bus for a few years until you get some no-claims and you get older.
Then pay no-claims insurance and hope for the best.

If you have a fault accident in your first year you're pretty much screwed.

I had an accident but I'm not sure if it was my fault or not. Y'see I was driving on the highway, it was raining heavily, and I was going at the speed of traffic. It was a little bit above the speed limit actually. Long story short I hit a big puddle, the car hydroplaned and crashed. No injuries or other cars involved, but the car was totaled. The state police wrote me up for "unsafe speed given road conditions." I stand by my side of the story that the car lost control. The puddle was not visible; even the trooper and the tow truck driver said so (they saw it as they came by to my car).

So does that count as my fault or not when filling out a quote request?

Unless you can find someone else to pin the blame on its your fault.
If the Police have written you up you really have no hope.
Or you can sue the puddle, up to you.

They'll say some shit like "A driver should ALWAYS be in control of the vehicle or not driving at all."

Now that I think about it though, I had my learner's permit at the time. I recall the insurance agent I had to talk to after the crash said something like it's technically under my parent's responsibility. I was in the car with my mom, sister and her friend.

If you're on a learners permit going over the limit in heavy rain and traffic with passengers in the car then really you have no clue, sorry.

This. If it's raining, especially to the point of standing water, slow the fuck down. Didn't Macbeth do the same thing?

I got a Ford Fiesta 1.3, and I only pay £1.2-3k (£130 a month).

But yeah, good solid choices. I got a friend with a 106, and it seems pretty solid. I got a few with Saxo's, too, and even though they're basically the same car, they always seem in worse condition.
