My brother likes trackballs for general use and surfing and has learned to use them in games over the past few years (pretty good at UT with one) but I'm just not sure it's accurate enough for use in BF2; not the specific one he has but this type of mouse in general.

This is in relation to ground-pounding, I can see the advantages it might have for flying and rotating the turret in armour. Thoughts?

If he is good with it in a fast paced game like UT then I'm sure he would do fine. It really just comes down to personal preference. I've known people who have all sorts of crazy setups for playing fps games and they have all been really good. Some use two joysticks and no keyboard, others use a keyboard exclusively, it's just whatever suits you best.

Yeah, I guess so but he seems to have much more trouble here and in other games where the input isn't as smooth as in UT (more-realistic games in general).

I've seen that too. It's so bizarre to me to see someone playing an FPS without a keyboard!

That's my concern too.

There's also the move, go past, adjust back thing where with a good normal mouse you just get bang-on the target in a single movement (ideally!) but that may be more a user problem than anything to do with the hardware

i use microsofts 5 button optical trackball - been using it for years and havent had any problems - i got tired of messing around with the mouse and adjusting it for gaming - though its easier now adays but im too used to the trackball i dont think ill go back to the mouse

when my buddies come over and see me using it they trip out...when they try it it takes them about 15 mins to get used to it and they start to like it - less hand and arm strain compared to all that moving from the mouse

i use the saitek x52 as a joystick in teh air only though - tried it with a mouse and it took a while to get used too but it was cool - buddy i was stationed with in korea used joystick + mouse for gaming in BF42
