How was that not the best move? You have two developed front line pawns that are on opposite squares to the bishop he's exchanging. However, the bishop on Macbeth's side has two developed pawns that are on the same coloured squares as him.SplinterStrike wrote:

Generally, you want to avoid having your pawns on the same squares as your developed bishop. Simply because bishops can only cover half of the board and limiting even more squares = bad.
This is very true with endgame, tighter situations (And seeing as the pawn structures as symmetrical I'm guessing endgame will be VERY close) are better to play with knights.
It was the best move to make in his situation, and it actually puts white ahead because he has slightly more development and board control. More space = better in chess.
BTW, I won't be playing in this match - I'd wreck you all at chess. So my role is simply to commentate ;o

How do you define 'best'? Some moves would encourage a different style of play, perhaps a sneaky attack, interesting counter etc. Or some moves could just be solid. It really depends... I'll have a look over the game later and see if there are any !!, ! or !? style moves.AussieReaper wrote:

After this, Reaper's move does make quite a strong stance, a quick check which is quickly dealt with may be seen as reckless play. A more accepted approach to developing an early bishop would have been 3. Bc4. The reason for this is simply because having complete control of the d5 square is a great advantage as the game progresses. 3. Bb5+ doesn't really do much unless it's dealt with incorrectly, which could actually get white a very early head start.Philidor Defense wrote:

Would give white a nice lead, and players on these forums could easily see that as an equal move to blocking 3. Bb5+ with Bd7.
Either way, back to the current stage of the game.
It's pretty even Stevens after considering it for a while. Although white DOES have slightly more board control and a decent pawn structure regarding his active bishop he is very limited in what he can develop at the moment (4. Nc3 or 4. Qd2 look like his best options).
Whereas black has a little more movement ability on his side. Both knights have options but his bishop is pretty useless as of the moment.
I'm projecting a little more development then some exchanging before someone finds a killer move that seals the game.
Black will win however.
Indeed. There's been no single system or computer program that can create a 'perfect move'. Though I do believe in the next 25-30 years we'll start to see computer programs come close to a perfect game.Cheez wrote:

well then, i know where Hakei's been all his life. i doubt the analysis made sense to a large percentage of the regular forum readers.
What's the problem with that? It'd be like me going into an advanced tech forum thread and saying the exact same thing.
I'm hoping my explanation wasn't that hard for someone with a basic understanding of chess though.
