We let Russia do what they wanted in Afghanistan back in the 70's? How would that affect the outlook of the past present and future?

It's a random question that popped in my head today. I'd rather ask it here than EE.

Ruskies would build gas pipelines.

Edit: And the cold war wouldn't end as fast.

There would be no Rambo 3... and life as we know it would therefore end.

Depends on how much the US actually helped and how much of a real difference it made.

You could probably argue that the Soviets would have eventually consolidated power/total control for the Soviet-Allied Afghan government and that Afghanistan would have never been plunged into Civil War and then Taliban rule and all that shit.

But I dunno, look at it right now, the Taliban aren't getting anywhere near enough outside assistance as they did against the Soviets but they're still holding their own against an even more advanced military institution. It wasn't necessarily the US that defeated the Soviets in Afghanistan which eventually led to the total demise of the Soviets, probably more complicated than just sending a few Stingers over the border.
