I wondered if I could make my photos look fancy.

I'm using an old fashioned camera, so I have to scan all my pics to my computer. Therefore the quality is a bit grainy. I use photoshop.

Any tips for me? All my pics I have right now are black and white.

EDIT: I'm looking for effects, not how to make it less grainy.

Thanks.

Ctrl + a > Filters > Noise > Reduce noise.

E: Oh and make sure your scanner is set to scan at the highest DPI.

I suppose you should make sure that they don't have any colored noise on them at all by converting the image itself to black & white

Adjust levels, adjust curves, add gradient maps on Soft Light, Overlay, and Color with mixed opacities, sharpen with the unsharp mask filter or a high pass, etc.

Here's one I post-processed yesterday:

Used all that ^ in it.

Click Me!

First result, watch the series. It's funny and intuitive.

The first three can all be found under the adjustment layers. Click the little circle in the layers palette (half black and half white), and that should pop up a little list of adjustment layers you can add.

Unsharp mask is under Filter/Sharpen/Unsharp Mask.
High Pass is under Filter/Other/High Pass. This method will require you to duplicate the layer, than use the high pass on the duped layer, and set its blending mode to overlay or soft light, and lower the opacity if it looks too strong.

I could write a short little tut for you, but I gotta head to work in 10 minutes, so maybe later today.

Anybody know any good guides on how to add different effects to photographs in photoshop?
In general.

Thanks.

It would help if you were more specific with you goal. There are tons of tuts out there. Have you tried lightroom? It's a little easier to walk into.
Beta 3 is free to try. Just make an account.

I would want to mess around with the colours and lights.

I'll try Lightroom.
