A blog that ran a photograph of U.S. first lady Michelle Obama altered to make her appear ape-like removed the image Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The distorted image created an international furor after it appeared on Google image searches, but the search engine had refused to remove it from its index due to free-speech concerns, the newspaper said.

The authors of the blog site "Hot Girls," which had posted the image, reportedly removed it Wednesday, inserting an apology written in Chinese and in broken English.

It was distaste but something about censorship I don't like.

On a sidenote:

Why when I put into google : michelle obama and use the default settings for safe search; moderate, why does google once I go to images suggest michelle obama ape? Seriously try it out. I'm not trying to be racist or funny or anything but anyone else find that fucked up?

That's the thing, Google says they removed them but when you search for michelle obama pics it points you in the direction to go and see them anyway.

It's not an intentional, it's just that will be what millions of people are currently searching for. That said, I can't actually find a copy of the photo.

EDIT: Oh wait, it's on here. It was such a shit photoshop job I assumed it couldn't possibly be the one they were talking about.

People throw around the words free speech and censorship too much. At the end of the day, these guys could have just kept that image and Google could have kept it too. It's just peer pressure which forced otherwise. Peer Pressure. Not actual legal censorship or restriction of freedoms and speech. Learn the difference because it might not make you look like an idiot in the future. Not specifically you Macbeth, but to those people who always hark on about "freedom, free speech and censorship" but they don't even understand the basics.

The only reason for removal I see is the totally crappy photoshopping.
And if the other images on the original "celebrityapes" page had the same quality, I'd cut the author's internet connection.
