I thought he may last a bit longer but  things have really turned against him in the last couple of days. Its a pity because he is the most progressive Liberal in the party. One of the other leadership contenders often gets mistaken for the guy in the photo below.

Seriously though, the Liberal party is in such a mess that Turnbulls job was secure as leader because no one else would want to lead the party into what will be a large loss at the next election. Most candidates would want to wait till after the election in 2010 to contest. Unfortunately for them the Liberals seem to want to maintain the ultra conservative stance that Howard represented. I would think this would be a mistake as the electorate showed that it wanted to move away from that style of govt to a more centre based one.  Tony Abbot may give the govt a scare if he is the man to replace Turnbull, but he can be a bit aggresive when you scratch the surface. If the Govt could make him lose his temper ( which would be pretty easy to do, ) it would make the libs look even worse.

Turnbull really is their best bet, but they will probably throw that out the window. Which reminds me of the saying" If the answer is Liberal, the question is probably stupid."

PS. Aussies, I often thought that there should be a dedicated "Australian politics thread" on these forums. Aussies would be the main users I guess, and it may only get activated , or "bumped " once every few weeks or so, but it may be good to use it to talk about stuff that doesnt rate on a world level , and other BF2sers wouldnt know about. What do you think?

I'd be down with that.

You guys think NSW politics is bad?

My local member got caught out today putting up a sticker which was meant to sling mud at two of the govt's MLAs. Stupid fucker.

For context, this same man got thrown out of the NT Police for attempting to dispose of evidence which would have his son sent to jail. He was elected here on the back of the CLP party machine (the person actually nominated by the CLP to stand for election stood down after having so much mud slung at her that she gave up).

Australian politics, political parties and politicians can all go eat shit as far as I care. Also, epic move on the welfare quarantine. Please, please, please let this become a national program.

Country hick so here's the obligatory mention... Libs/Nationals > ALP

Don't be surprised when we quit the Monarchy after the next election.

Its a shame, the Libs are owned by big business, Labour by the unions, more so than anywhere else I think.
Labour has always been with the unions. It was founded as such. And you'll see most union reps make it into the Labour party because of that.
I find the career unionist -> career politician thing pretty off.
That someone can just politick their way through life without ever actually doing a working job is not healthy.
