There's really nothing more pathetic than the people in former factory towns who sit around waiting for someone to bring back the factory jobs to them instead of going out and finding other work.

If these factories are in or near large metropolitan centers, I agree.  However, often times these factories are located in or around more rural areas where there isn't much else.  In those cases I blame poor planning by the city government in not courting other businesses to the area.  There is nothing more stupid than having a town's majority employment based around a single large employer.

If the town was based around a factory and the factory closes the town has no reason for further existence. Town dead, move on and stop clinging to the past.

Thats true, however I'm still waiting for someone to explain how the balance of trade is going to work if all a countries' consumer products are imported and none are exported.
