Jobless rate tops 10 pct. for first time since '83

Google wrote:

WASHINGTON — The unemployment rate has hit double digits for the first time since 1983 — and is likely to go higher. The 10.2 percent jobless rate for October shows how weak the economy remains even though it is growing. The rising jobless rate could threaten the recovery if it saps consumers' confidence and makes them more cautious about spending as the holiday season approaches.

The October unemployment rate — reflecting nearly 16 million jobless people — jumped from 9.8 percent in September, the Labor Department said Friday. The job losses occurred across most industries, from manufacturing and construction to retail and financial.

Economists say the unemployment rate could surpass 10.5 percent next year because employers are reluctant to hire.

President Barack Obama called the new jobs report another illustration of why much more work is needed to spur business creation and consumer spending. Noting legislation he's signing to provide additional unemployment benefits for laid-off workers, Obama said, "I will not rest until all Americans who want work can find work."

The government's monthly unemployment report is based on two surveys, one of households, one of companies' payrolls. The household survey showed that about 558,000 more people were unemployed last month than in September, raising the total to 15.7 million. The company survey, however, showed only a third as many job losses — 190,000.
Must be nice to have the media in your back pocket.  For whatever reason its like everyone went "meh" all at once.

Is high unemployment the the new norm?  Is congress just going to keep extending Unemployment money (that those working stiff are paying though our paychecks)?

When factoring " those that have stopped looking for work " the real number is more like 18%.

No, what you have is abject failure of the fucks in politics who get rich screwing everybody over.

Crime does pay, that's the lesson here in this financial meltdown.

Unemployment is always the last thing to turn around. Companies hire after they have stabilized. Historically unemployment has counted the people who are actually trying to find work but can't. It's not a media conspiracy. Doom and gloom sells much better than sunflowers and applesauce.

"President Barack Obama called the new jobs report another illustration of why much more work is needed to spur business creation and consumer spending"

How about stop giving to every big company with its hand out and let the consumers spend that money??? I am not big in economics but how does giving a trillion and a half dollars to big banks helping anyone when the banks don't loan, raise interest rates to astronomical levels and prop up their own books.....wouldn't it have been better to let the consumers spend it....after all it would have gone right back to the banks anyway through house, car and credit card payments and savings/ checking accounts would be bulged a bit. I guess it just doesn't make sense to me.

Obama wants to spur business creation and consumer spending...then let us spend the damn money.

We are giving money we don't have to big business...would it have been worse to give it to the consumers to actually spend it?? Maybe someone here could tell me what the difference is between big business "spending" (rather hording it) and consumers spending that same money.

Here out Government gave a stimulus package to middle to lower income earners and the GDP result was so good another round of stimulus was handed out shortly after. We only saw one period of negative growth, didn't even make it into technical recession.

I agree with you, some stimulus to the consumer would have helped greatly, not only does it give the poor, out of job, etc a boost, but they then spend that money on the businesses that are struggling.

Now that the big businesses are recording some profits they should really fund the govts. next stimulus to the people.

Yes, this would be called a "recovery".

The Dow's not gonna be at 14K and the unemployment rate at below 5 in 2 weeks alone. It takes time.

Well...i just do not get why we are doing what we are doing and then now we are tacking on another 1.2 trillion dollars in a health care bill, not to mention all the money spent fighting over this stuff, and the numbers just keep growing and growing and growing. It just boggles my mind the total care free attitude and free spending these idiots are doing. I wish I could spend like a mad man with no regard.

What do normal people do when they dont have money to spend..they cut back, the find ways to save and control spending....yet, our government simply spends more and more and more. One other thing, the government did pass something to do with giving senior citizens 250 dollars to "help" them,....honestly, that was a slap in the face when you consider the money they have handed out over this last year. How much did that help any senior citizen? Seriously?

Again, I am in no way an economic major but none of this makes any sense to me.

The economy is not recovered until the unemployment rate goes back down, at least for me. We could have the national god damn debt paid off but if people still can't find work, I'm gonna call it a shit economy.

I see two things that are going to make recovery take awhile.

1. People are busting their ass trying to make sure they keep their job.  This means employers are getting more productivity from fewer employees, making them reticent about replacing workers they have previously let go.

2. For a long time credit was cheap and easy, and consumers were spending like drunken sailors.  Eventually that money had to be paid back, so the consumer sector spending just couldn't go on like it was before.  There is going to be some time for adjustment as people work to get their previous debts paid off.  How long this takes can largely be affected by what the banks do.  They all jacked interest rates through the roof on revolving lines of credit, making payback cost more and take longer.

Employment does lag behind a recovery, and noting you say or believe will change that fact. You are right in one thing, the US economy is still not in recovery, but when it is don't expect unemployment to start falling (and it may even rise) for at least 6 months after that fact.

Because your dads small business makes up the entire US economy?
Even in the best of economic conditions businesses fire people, lose money and fail, don't give me that bullshit excuse, your dads business is about as important as a drop in the ocean.
