yup.  and THAT was the beginning of the attack.  (during clinton years btw)
Clinton should have been using the CIA to monitor flying schools, obviously.
nope.  but, when people say the attack happened on 9/11...i dont agree.  the point when they entered the US for that sole purpose was the attack.  it just ended on 9/11.

The guy was a psychologist and they are almost by definition messed up and have a higher suicide rate than other occupations.
From what I've read, he was being investigated for posting thoughts about suicide bombers, IMO those thoughts have more to do with aligning himself with others who have committed suicide because he wanted to commit suicide.... The fact that he is Muslim and suicide bombers are Muslim provided an easy avenue for self identification. It would really be a bad outcome if Muslim people who want to commit suicide suddenly see this as a avenue to avoid judgment in the afterlife like death by cop or catholic suicides where people dress in dark clothing and walk down a highway at night in the hopes of getting killed.

Anyway, the terrorist tag is going a bit far and probably works a disservice to everyone by washing over the real issues concerning stress of service, deployment, stress of those counseling other soldiers and issues of possible harassment because he was a Muslim. None of these excuse what he did, but addressing those issues would work to help prevent another incident like this from occurring. The label terrorist is the simple solution and doesn't help do anything and the ultimate result of that inquiry is the solution of removing Muslims from activity duty kind of like WWII Japanese internment.

Erm, flight school takes months/a couple of years. This guy was a career military man American with 20 years experience, long before the Bin Ladens, the intifadas in Palestine, the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Doesn't really wash as far as I'm concerned. Nobody 'sleeps' for that long. And nobody who is a sleeper for that long would be so lax as to post shit months in advance of a hit. That's just retarded.
Cam, this guy planned this. He didn't wake up Thursday and decide to snap and go kill fellow soldiers. He had an objective just like any suicide bomber, and he carried it out, to a greater effectiveness than most suicide bombers I might add.

Of course he planned it. But I don't think he planned it 21 years ago when he entered the military. That is my point. That would be what would be defined as infiltration.

Nope, once he turned away from hid oathe, and continued to use his credentials to gain access and favor, he infiltrated.
Infiltration does not have a time table attached to it.

Bin Laden's second is a doctor, so what. This guy, by definition is a terorrist, just like any other in a school shooting or Oaklahoma City. He infiltrated areas of the US military and opened fire. There is no need to down play who he was or what he did.

What is your definition of a terrorist?

And is there evidence at all that this guy was actually motivated by jihad? Or, as I was led to believe, he simply cracked?

I wouldn't say my comments downplay what he did.
But the label of terrorist won't do anything to help prevent other people in the military from snapping under the pressure. And I guess that's my main point, that unless evidence comes out that he was indoctrinated to become a suicide bomber, then it really looks like some idiot who grabbed a gun and began killing people because he wanted to die... So yes you are right this guy is a terrorist like any other idiot who steps onto a school yard and opens fire on kids. The difference though is that it is not likely that there will be another idiot like a school yard shooter getting ready to open up, while there might be another stressed out soldier about to snap. And while it might be impossible to stop a school yard shooter because you don't know who they are, the military is sure to be able to identify soldiers who are at risk of snapping and doing things like this. So I agree he is a terrorist, but that label is simply not sufficient to gain a fuller understanding to prevent this from happening again. I expect the military will be looking very closely at mental helath of some of its soldiers in the near future to try and prevent this from happening again.

I would suggest profiling is in order. We have Muslims in our army fighting against Islamic extremism, maybe it is time we examined the issue, of where do loyalites lie, in dealing with Islam and the Muslims in our army.

Yes, the military could do that. IMO they should  provide some people who are "conscious objectors" with honorary discharge or assignments not related to the campaigns rather than trying to squeeze them into high stress roles where they might self identify with the enemy.... doing that is just not worth it.

In any case, to me it looks like this guy was mentally unfit, thinking about suicide, and looking at how others justify suicide and how to go about doing it... in other words he looks like an idiot copy cat rather than a hard core fundamentalist terrorist.... but who knows, as Spark says, he's alive and we should find out the "why" before they shoot him.

We will have to disagree. As far as I'm concerned he defected, he didn't infiltrate. To engage in the infiltration of something you would have to enter into the organisation you are infiltrating with intent. I don't think he entered with malevolent intent, it developed later.

Yeah. Couldn't deal with the reality of giving people the right to vote, get an education, choose their own way, etc. Couldn't deal with the reality of Americans putting their lives on the line and dying for people in the middle east (whether they asked them to or not). That reality must've really thrown him for a loop.

Why would it be? The guy posted repeatedly to radical Islamic websites, walked in in traditional Islamic garb, shouted "Allahu Akhbar" and started shooting. No reason to think Islam was involved in any way.
