I'm still having trouble understanding what this is and why people are so in love with it. It's like an RSS feed, yes?

But I've heard about people using them for news updates and stuff??
The reason I am asking is because I want to get an app that gives me a single place for RSS feeds and general news updates I can navigate to from my Android phone.
Google Reader is annoying, otherwise I would probably use that.

It can actually be quite useful. It depends on how you use it.
For me, I mainly use it with my close friends so we can see what's up with each other. I put shit on twitter that my close friends would be interested, but my ok friends and acquaintances on facebook wouldn't care about and wouldn't want cluttering their news feeds. I also use twitter to follow things like NASA's news, CNN, and some restaurant owners in DC. This one group that's opening a restaurant had its followers on twitter give their opinions on what fries they should serve... pretty cool.
People have this idea that you are instantly given every single twitter update when you sign up, and that's not true. You only see the updates of people follow.

Well some news companies have news feeds. Such as http://twitter.com/cnnbrkCapnNismo wrote:

And if you want music news then you could follow something like NME Magazine, or for Tech news you could follow Engadget. Or perhpas NASA interests you.
As some examples.
I follow quite a lot of bands/artists - they often announce gig dates, new music, and etc via their twitter accounts. Similar to being on a band's mailing list.
Surely Andriod has some kind of RSS application, in that case.
I'm following liq.
its all about the tags
edit: we used yammer at one job, it too was annoying

gay. That is what Twitter is.
It's for twits.
Yeah, I suppose. My "friends" use it as if it is twitter. That combined with shitty spelling and grammar is making me consider deactiviating my account since it is so fucking annoying.-=]NS[=-Eagle wrote:

It's for people who are nobodies, who want to feel like they are somebody by having people follow the boring minutiae of their shitty and pointless existences. Which those people following them are either friends, or are following twitterers because their lives are even more pointless and shitty than the people they are following, or are following twitteres for reasons that are perverse, or a combination of all those possibilities.ATG wrote:

Or, as ATG said... twits.
i use it for news and information.
twitter is what you make of it, really.

I get lots of info from NASA. I get instantly notified when this finance website I use posts a new article. I get info from Starbucks (e.g. about some revisions to their gold card program, or the iPhone apps they released). I get interesting articles from the Army. I get updates from my school's athletics teams. I get updates from bands that I like.
What I don't use it for is following random people that I do not know. I almost never do that trending topics crap. It's like myspace: a well-designed profile is nice to look at and use, while poorly designed ones aren't.

This graphic probably best describes Twitter:
