The White House’s fear of protests from Code Pink and other left-wingers has put the brakes on President Obama making any public appearances during his visit to San Francisco this week.

Obama is scheduled to parachute into Liberalville on Thursday afternoon and pick up a cool $2 million for the Democratic Party at a fundraiser at the St. Francis Hotel – then spend the night, before checking out early the next morning and heading to Houston for a community service forum hosted by former President George H.W. Bush.

The St. Francis event is about all the public will see of him here. Concerns about big and loud protests over the war in Afghanistan, the prohibition on open gays and lesbians in the military and other issues have squelched any thought of a trip to a local school or high-tech manufacturing plant that often accompanies such visits, said a source involved in the planning.

“You’re always sensitive about having your San Francisco moment here,” said former White House spinmeister Chris Lehane.

He still recalls a news conference he organized here in 2000 for then-presidential candidate Al Gore. It turned into a near-disaster when a “transvestite kept asking if he would support public funding for sex changes.”

“No matter how you answered, you get in trouble,” Lehane said.

San Fran is liberalville right?

No, the message is a non message. All its saying is Obama won't be public in San Fran due to protesters.
He won't go to a center of gravity of the base of his party because he's afraid of protesters...from his own party.
I'd be afraid of wacko-left-wing-pinko-spastic Dems too.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

The problem with that is that if we were to pull out now, it would be in a similar condition as it was when the Soviets withdrew, it would be taken over by extremists and then in turn would be a home for terrorists. Not to mention all the drugs that are ground their.

Afghanistan is an increasingly costly war, but history has shown that the cost of withdrawing would be very high as well. I'm not saying that pulling out of Afghanistan is the wrong course of action, but the problem of Afghanistan is an extremely complex issue.

Come 2012, San Fransisco is gunna be viewed as an Obama stronghold compared to what is coming his way.

I know I know... I was groggy when I wrote that.

What I fear is that we need to send a TON of troops to Afghanistan if we really want to secure it. I'd bet $10 that if we had the amount of troops there we had deployed in WWII, we could rout all of the Taliban in a few months.

SF was an Obama stronghold in 2008, why wouldn't it be again?

That's one thing that's always confused me. Your army is HUGE. Yet a tiny fraction are in Afghanistan, and people are like "oh shit it's getting bad" and I just don't get it, you guys could easily send like 200,000 troops looking at the numbers. What the hell are most of your military doing if they're not in Afghanistan or Iraq

Then again you guys implemented the draft and everything for Vietnam yet still couldn't change the country (unless you resorted to killing everyone).

I think part of the issue in Vietnam was tactics. IIRC, at the start we were using special operations teams, counterinsurgency teams. Then we started fighting it like a regular war and that's when things went downhill.

Look at Iraq. We started it as a regular war and things were pretty bad. The surge, combined with putting everyone under the leadership of General Petraeus who was a very strong believer in counter- and anti-insurgency tactics got Iraq under control.

Now if I'm not mistaken, we're using counter-insurgent tactics in Afghanistan. But what we need is a ton of troops.

We have more to do than just Afghanistan and Iraq.

While most of San Francisco welcomes Obama with open arms, the fringe Left here would definitely show up to call him out on being more moderate than we had initially hoped.  I can easily see Code Pink and the other groups coming up to tell him to stop the wars and to stop vying for bipartisanship; to grow a set and to get started working out some of his promises.
