Personally, I'd say to go with the vanilla 6800. It's the best "bang for your buck" since you can overclock it to 6800GT speeds. However, the 6600 isn't a bad card either.

You can get a 6600GT 128 MB (which is better than a 9800) for under $150. Or you can get a 6800 GT 256 MB for under $280. You can also get a reg. 6800 256 MB for under $200. The 7800GTX is the best out there but those are still $450 or more. It really just depends on how much you want to spend and how picky you are. I run a 6600 256 MB AGP and it handles BF2 on medium settings, so you should be all right with any of these cards here. It is also possible to overclock the 6800 up to a GT.
I used newegg.com for all the pricing.

get atleast a 6800gt...if you can afford a 6800 ultra then do that...but, if you really want the best card get the 7800gtx...i have a 7800 and say it was worth every penny, and i paid many because i picked it up when it first came out...the difference between the quality of video and operating temps on the 7800 really make it leaps and bounds above anything else out right now...and you are on the right track going nvidia, they are absolutely dominating ati in desktop video cards

i'm running an aging athlon xp 1.53 overclocked, 250gb HD, 1024gb RAM, a radeon 9800pro vid card, 7 button logitech mouse and zboard.  want to upgrade processor, but i absolutely love my vid card.  got an awesome deal from newegg on it and it got here really fast.  GOD BLESS NEWEGG!!!

despite my aging overclocked processor my cpu never tops 50.C under load she generally runs at 42.C

i did have to add a plug ATI slot fan system to help keep the vid card cooled since the card came with an insufficient fan.

7800gtx run everything full high and 4x anti-aliasing...clicking off between 80-100 fps without any problems for hours on end...and i never get above 40C

yep.  the only thing better than one of these cards is having two of these cards running in SLI.

ATI cards are not bad at all. I dont know where you heard that ATI sucks. Anyways as for as a video card for 200 dollars I would say either a 6800, 9800 pro, 6600 gt (9800 pro and 6600 gt are fairly the same, speed wise). Overall I would say that the 6800 would run it the best. You could also do a few other things, like look around for a used video card, maybe you can find a 6800 gt for less than 200 used. Anyways, good luck!

Personally I prefer the Nvidia products as the drivers are more user friendly and currently the 7800gtx demolishes anything ATI has to offer.  My wife has an ATI card and upgrading the drivers is a near maddening experience compared to Nvidia.

Wait a few more weeks. New graphics card released by ATI. High Speed one by ATI later.
With these new graphics cards 7800's will go down in price.
850 series will also get close to $200 mark.

For machines that have AGP the 850 series will probably be the last series for it. All new graphics cards are going to PCI Express x16 even though they have yet maximized a AGP x4 slot. But that's popular and public opinion for you. Public demand warrented the PCI Ex release and distribution, not technology.

Tried the uninstaller, took forever and it reads as two video cards instead of one.  On a side note the fact that the DVI port on the one ATI card I bought for my EQ 2 box set blew after a couple months did'nt help my outlook much .
