I applied for a Wells Fargo credit card a few weeks ago and was rejected. No big deal I thought. I applied for a BankAmericard Visa just now, after talking to a customer service rep who said it's a good option for students.

All my info was correct such as residence, SSN etc. In terms of money, I said the monthly payment for my housing is zero bucks because it's campus housing and it's already paid off lol. For income I said I was a full-time student at a four-year university, put down how much money (average) I get per month and said the source of income was my parents.

And I got rejected.

Christ how the hell do you get a god damn credit card? I remember reading how they're supposed to be more likely to give cards to students since they usually have parents who will bail them out if things get messy.

I don't know how people fall into "credit traps" when it's probably easier to join the FBI HRT or Secret Service than it is to get one of these things.

I don't spend much. My idea is that what I do spend, I'd charge on the card and then pay in full at the end of each month. Since my parents do give me money each month. This would build my credit score.

I have a Visa, I just use it to buy things over the net and for emergencies when I'm completely skint. Through online banking I always ensure that it's in the green so I don't have to pay interest. I'm the kind of person credit card companies hate 'cause they don't make money off me. Online banking's awesome as a way to make sure you're not paying copious amounts of interest. It's definitely the way to go.

Generally banks don't like giving out credit cards unless you're employed. That's fair enough I think, even if you are getting enough money from your folks, (how much money do you get anyway?) Having a job prooves that you have some responsibility, that you know, (somewhat,) the value of money, that you're not just going to spend up large and expect the olds to cover for you - which they might not 'cause at the end of the day it's your arse not theirs.

I have a credit card with discover and a debit card with BOA, but my credit is joint with my mum so i have a $50000 limit lulzz, I believe my debit is also a joint account with my mom too but I'm on the student plan with BOA, too bad you can't bring your mommy with you

Debit cards are awesome, the bank I'm with for some ridiculously retarded reason refuses to introduce them. My sister who works on that particular bank's marketing account, (she works for an ad agency,) has time and time again suggested that they use them but the people at the bank are too thinkheaded to introduce them. If I was arsed I'd switch banks but I'm not. Not yet anyway.

Get a prepaid card, that's what I did, didn't need to fill anything out, I just went to the bank, said I wanted a prepaid credit card, had to sign a very simple application and done.

SEC. 301. EXTENSIONS OF CREDIT TO UNDERAGE CONSUMERS.

Section 127(c) of the Truth in Lending Act (15 U.S.C. 1637(c)) is amended by adding at the end the following:

‘(8) APPLICATIONS FROM UNDERAGE CONSUMERS-

‘(A) PROHIBITION ON ISSUANCE- No credit card may be issued to, or open end consumer credit plan established by or on behalf of, a consumer who has not attained the age of 21, unless the consumer has submitted a written application to the card issuer that meets the requirements of subparagraph (B).

‘(B) APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS- An application to open a credit card account by a consumer who has not attained the age of 21 as of the date of submission of the application shall require--

‘(i) the signature of a cosigner, including the parent, legal guardian, spouse, or any other individual who has attained the age of 21 having a means to repay debts incurred by the consumer in connection with the account, indicating joint liability for debts incurred by the consumer in connection with the account before the consumer has attained the age of 21; or

‘(ii) submission by the consumer of financial information, including through an application, indicating an independent means of repaying any obligation arising from the proposed extension of credit in connection with the account.

@McMinty what the fuck... so now we get to wait even longer before having a credit history? For christ's sake, I'll be 21 when I graduate college. I'm kinda gonna need a credit history to get good loans and get approved for leasing an apartment, etc.

Wtf do you need a credit history for if you're under 21? Seriously kid, it's not like you're going to be a rockstar millionaire as soon as you graduate. You'll have plenty of time to establish a credit history before you REALLY need it i.e. when it's time to buy a house.
