Ok i have a really crappy sound card; the sound blaster live! and i also have on board sound from my mobo which happens to be some Sound Max stuff from my ASUS A8R-MVP

Since i dont plan to buy a good sound card because i have 2.1 speakers even though they are high end speakers i doubt it will make much difference.

So i was just wondering which sound device should i use.

Sound Blaster Live!
Sound Max thingy

The Live! hardware is by far the superior.  The downside is that Creative's drivers suck so bad that I can't currently come up with any words to adequetly describe something that shitty.

Use the SB Live!, ditch the speakers and use a good pair of headphones.

whats the advantage of headphones, i mean they dont produce bass and less frequency response.

There's lots of advantages to headphones vs speakers. They can help mask out extraneous noise which can distract you during a game, the make determining the direction of sounds easier, and are a must for late night gaming if you have roommates or parents.

As for frequency response, at 20Hz - 20KHz, my Plantronics Audio 90s have just as good if not better range than many high priced 2.1 or surround computer speaker systems.

I have zero problems with Creative drivers. The crc check at the beginning of installation is not an error, like so many people think it is. It's the software making sure everything's there before it runs.

The X-Fi XtremeMusic is leagues beyond the Live! in quality. For a paltry $80-$100, you can grab one. If you don't have the money, get a job or save.

Headphones are better for VOIP, as they perfectly slice out any speaker-related feedback. Plus only you can hear squeaky 11-year olds giving you orders.

Just installed XFi-F.  No problems with the drivers on the CD.

You know what's really funny, I just barely got done working over a system.  It had an Audigy2 ZS in it, and when it came time to install the drivers the installation said it couldn't detect an Audigy product in the system.  I had to force feed the drivers into Windows.  The sad part is this, I had the same problems several years ago with the Live! card I had.

Also, there are forums full of people that have had nothing but problems with Creative drivers.  They have some awesome hardware, but they need to give their driver team a swift kick in the ass.
