I thought it was a good speech from about 5:00 on. Delivered well. I think this is an important issue. One that is rarely taken seriously.

yet another reason to move the hell outta thereAgent_Dung_Bomb wrote:
You should see the irony where I live. Most of the government offices are held by Mormons. Every time hate crime legislation comes up it goes nowhere if sexual preference is in the bill. The former Lt. Govenor, that is now govenor since Huntsman became the Chinese ambassador, doesn't think we need it. He said we shouldn't have to add every possible group into hate crimes, or we would need a classification for blonds with blue eyes.
Just a day or two ago in the newspaper there was a report of vandalism at some of the LDS churches. There is debate on whether this will be prosecuted as a hate crime, because ones religion is grounds for a hate crime.
Now the irony gets even better. Utah politicians are majorly gung ho for states rights. However, the SLC mayor wants to enact laws that would prevent discrimination based on sexual preference in jobs and housing within SLC (only affects the city proper) and the legislature is now looking at whether they will make laws that make it impossible for cities to make such laws. They don't want the feds telling them what to do, but are more than willing to tell the cities what they can and cannot do because these self righteous, religious fucks don't like it.
Typical conservative hypocrisy.
Hell, Dick Cheney said gay marriage was OK.Kmarion wrote:

I do it for lowing's sake, since he can't comment on a thread where he doesn't blame the liberals for whatever the topic at hand may be.Kmarion wrote:

Cheney only said that cuz otherwise his daughter would stop speaking to him.FEOS wrote:

Pigeon-holing requires less thinking, Kmar.
You've got a point. The only thing they have to fight is prejudice and ignorance. They have every civil right as others AFAIK.Stingray24 wrote:
Curious what civil rights gay folks don't already have?

Is Cheney the basic archetype of the neocon that so many stereotype here? Yes.Doctor Strangelove wrote:

Well they can't serve in the military. I know there's a loophole so that technically they can under "Don't Ask Don't Tell" but that whole system's a mess. Gay and lesbian couples are not reckognised under the law which means they are not afforded the same rights as a married couple not to mention all the other issues surrouding homoexuality and marriage. They are denied insurance based on their sexuality, (particularly health insurance,) denied jobs, (which as Sydney said has more to do with predjudice and ignorance than denied rights.) All and all it's not good to be gay in America, (and in general everywhere else too,) and there's really no reason for it.Stingray24 wrote:

The only part of this that's accurate is highlighted/modified.Ty wrote:

First, I'm not a fan of DADT. Let's get that out there right off the bat. I have no issues with gays serving openly. One's sex life shouldn't come up in conversation in the workplace. Period. Regardless of the nature of it. I was simply referring to the realities of DADT's application. Gays CAN serve. They have. They do. They simply cannot serve openly. That is the nature of DADT, and it is certainly a better situation for them than it was prior to DADT, where they could be investigated for suspicion of homosexuality and drummed out of the service for any findings that pointed to that.Ty wrote:
FEOS so are you saying that because homosexuals CAN serve in the military despite DADT that their rights are respected? Why should they have to lie to serve? It's not simply a matter of not revealing your sexuality. In general conversation, talking about relationships as people do they simple fact that homosexuals in the military have to change "him" to "her", (and vice-cersa,) or make up names for their partners and it strongly enforces the notion that homosexuality isn't acceptable, it isn't right. I mean it's fucking ridiclous, we're in the 21st century and homosexuals face loosing their jobs and accidently refer to "Jenny" as "Jerry".
And you said that eveything else I wrote was bogus/illegal - but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Face it, there's a double standard going on here and although much of it stems from simple societal prejudices the law of the land still enforces the notion that is not okay to be gay.
