According to ESPN, the executive director of the NFL players union has written an email to the association's executive committee, detailing his opposition to any purchase of the St. Louis Rams football team by Rush Limbaugh.

NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith wrote, "I've spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred."

Limbaugh -- a native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri -- first mentioned his interest in owning the NFL team in spring 2009, and has teamed with St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts to submit a bid. ESPN reports that the pair are among six potential bidders.

The St. Louis Business Journal reports that "given the poor state of the economy and the Rams' miserable on-field performance," sources estimate the franchise's entire value at $700 million to $750 million. The team is family owned. Its majority owners are siblings Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez.

Limbaugh had a brief stint as an NFL commentator for ESPN in 2003, but was forced to resign after controversial comments about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb:

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well,'' Limbaugh said. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

The New York Daily News caught up with several players who voiced concern that Limbaugh might soon become an NFL owner.

New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka:
"...if it goes through, I can tell you where I am not going to play."

So I've mostly seen this type of thing come from the left more; we don't like you're views so we're gonna boycott you, try to get you fired, don't want you at our events, or don't want to do business with you. I don't understand just because somebody doesn't have the same views as you why do you feel the need to  try to wreak their personal lives or in this case stop Rush from actually helping out a team.

Nothing can save the Rams. Nothing.

Not even John Tavares.

well if he gets the team (also never knew Limbaugh had that much dough) but yeah anyways if he plans to get the team he can pick the players he likes.... also at the end of the day you are getting paid millions, not sure how often do players talk to their owners (Jerry Jones being an exception)...

NFL is dominated by black people, of course you're going to get this from someone like that Limbaugh guy from what I've heard about this dude.

Yea.  I'm sure that the NFL is bigot free.  Limbaugh's right hand man is Snerdly Aka. James Golden.  Golden happens to be black.

Good call there Mek.  Way to show an informed viewpoint.

Limbaugh is polarizing.  I, however, believe he would make a great owner.

Do the owners actually do anything, other than occasionally meet the players?

No.  I think he has enough smarts to run a good organization.  I think he will hire people that will make the organization successful.

2 worst owners in the NFL:

Al Davis- Not even close
Jerry Jones

They also hire the guy who hires all the guys (GM). The Glazers (our owners) played a major role in the restructuring this year. One of the leagues best defensive coordinators Monte Kiffin, gone,
quarterback, gone
pro bowlers, gone.

Some are more active than others, but since the buck stops with them they have ultimate control. They can tell the GM to go to hell when it comes to what/who they will pay for. ... and they do.

The NFL =/= the NFL Player's Union.

Rush Limbaugh is a cantakerous windbag - let him do what he wants.  Al Davis thinks it's still 1970 and owns a team, so you really can't get much worse than that.

Well, I don't like him but he should be able to do what he wants with his money.

The hurdle is the other owners in the league.  They said no. So right now he can't own a team.  I don't think he should be banned from bidding for a team at all.  He can try and try again until he gives up.
