My school had real problems, if getting sent home for a streak in my hair was the worst thing imaginable then I'd have been a pretty happy student

Meh, if I ran a private school, I wouldn't want students to run around with fucking pink hair - doesn't exactly give an image of academic excellence, does it?
Private schools are all about image, that is how they get more and better applicants. If the students make it look like a chavtastic rebellious shithole, then, well... yeah.
I'm not saying you do this, how could I, but I'm sure you get the point. Pink hair may, to some people, be nice in some occasions, but a school can't judge wether or not a specific case is ok or not. They have to have rules and stick to them.
