Has anyone here been in the Army Reserve (not the IRR)? What's it like? Is it just one weekend of training per month? How does that work, do you start Friday night or Saturday morning...? How's the pay per month? Do you get the benefits that active duty soldiers receive?
One weekend a month and two weeks during the summer.Hurricane2k9 wrote:

I'm sure muster times depend on the unit.
You get paid for the time you work, so two days of pay a month and two weeks of pay during the summer at your current pay grade.
You can shop at the PX either once a week or once a month, I can't remember which. You do get medical and dental but the time period you can use it is also limited (I think). GI Bill is a lot lower.
You WILL deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan.
Some MOS's are restricted to active duty. Your MOS may also indirectly be picked for you based on what units are close to you. If you're willing to travel further for drill you'll have more options.
Any other questions, direct them to a recruiter

So you probably can't live off of just drill pay right?
Sure, if you can live off of ~$300 a monthHurricane2k9 wrote:

heh, ok. I was looking up "Army reserve drill pay" and I saw the pay charts and I thought that was what you got monthly. Blah.
Is it the same for the National Guard?

I was filling out the application form online and there were only like 6 job options on there. I think it's cos I'm a permanent resident.SEREMAKER wrote:

Some of the ones that interest me are (this is for the Army):SEREMAKER wrote:
what MOS are looking at
36B Financial Management Technician (useful if I wanna become an accountant)
13M MLRS Crewmember
89D EOD Specialist
37F PSYOP Specialist (Wouldn't surprise me at all if this requires you to be a citizen though)
31B Military Police
21M Firefighter
Do these all require you to be a citizen or something? The only things I saw on the job search that applied to me were 11B and 13B.
edit: According to the Army Career Explorer, it predicts I'd get around an 85 on my AFQT. So it's not like I'm too stupid to be an MLRS Crewmember or a Firefighter.

Hmm... I'll assume the Army Career Explorer just sucks or something. I guess it'd be better to talk to a recruiter?
If you were only offered 12B as an MOS it's probably because you were looking for a contract of 2 years.

I don't think it was that. There was never an option to select your contract. And aren't all contracts four years now, or am I carazy?
And they also offered some stuff like 92G.

I dunno man. You're better off talking to a recruiter. Just tell him that you'll walk if he lies to you at all. My recruiter was 100% honest with me (aside from having no idea what my job description was and faking it ).Hurricane2k9 wrote:

What about if he tells me to lie about something on my papers? Is it true that only you are held accountable for that and not the recruiter?
What would you have to lie about? And yes, it is completely on you. He's just trying to fill a quota while you would have to live with the consequences for a long time if found out.Hurricane2k9 wrote:
