Hmm, i'm now in a conumdrum.

Do I wait for conroe/AM2 or do I get a Socket 939 AMD now?


I got talking to a guy at work while back (a guy who came in for some bespoke s/w we use), he mentioned going the route of getting an Opteron instead. Those badboys are much better built than their siblings the A64's and overclock much better if ever I want to do so...

yeah i have a second comp with an opty, stock 1.8ghz now at 2.9ghz with wc , but conroe is looking pretty fucking impressive, but AMD all the way, intel heat problems piss me off so i stick with me X2

I know I wrote a big response to this yesterday... musta either forgot to submit or it got deleted.  Here's the short and sweet version:

History repeats itself
Go back 10 (11?) years and guys were thinking the same thing... do I buy a fast 486 now or wait for the Pentium 90?
Then it was Pentium or Pentium PRO?
then it was P2, P3, P4.... of course AMD had their own counterparts through all of this, but they were mostly neck and neck with everyone thinking "Intel" was a cut above because of TV brainwashing.
Roll back the clock just a little over a year (is it 2?) and the same debate was going between a fast XP chip and a "new" A64 chip.  Sure the A64 was probably 20 to maybe 30% faster, but at over TWICE the price, it's not to smart of an upgrade.  Some did it because they were thinking "I've got the newer setup so I can upgrade easier".  WRONG, they got 754 chipset systems with AGP instead of the 939 and PCI-Express systems we now get.
There's never a perfect time, but there's always a perfect price to performance spot.  I call it "on the verge of the bleeding edge".  The bleeding edge being the super overpriced.

if upgrade now... get a cheap p4, get the 975x mobo(conroe support) and when conroe is out, get it and conroe's power is a LOT lower than the pentiums now

i bought 2 GB of ddr2 ram for 200 bucks once... that was an all time low when they mass produced it... when AM2 is released, the mass producing of ddr2 shall come

This is a good thread and I'd like to steal some of the words for the sticky if that's O.K. with people.

As for upgrade would anyone care to read through my very long post of propose a sticky?

Tell me what you think it's still a work in progress...

I'd like to deal with a couple other issues then talk about migrating to 939.

Steal whatever you like... this is a "public" forum, so I don't think anyone can bicth about copywright.
The only problem with making an "upgrade" sticky is that everyone has their own opinion on what's best.  I personally like AMD and Nvidia, that alone pisses off some Intel guys and ATI guys.
I'd happily comment or recommend changes on whatever you wrote. 

As to the ram statements above, DDR2 is already cheaper than DDR.  Everything we buy is "mass produced".  Did you think that DDR2 ram you bought was "hand made"?  The trouble is that we're almost compairing apples to oranges.  PC100 ram got cheap when it was most common, not long after DDR ram came out it started out producing PC100, 133 etc and the prices of the "old" ram increased a little and the newer ram became cheaper per MB.  The same is currently happening with DDR2.  It's the same thing that's happening with AGP vs. PCI Express video cards.  APG prices have stayed a little too high and you don't see the same deals anymore, but PCI-Express prices are dropping and are currently even lower (in most cases) than AGP for an equal card.

Good luck with your sysem.  You got a lot of nice parts.  It's not going to be OCing king though.  I still think you should have bougth an opteron.  I didn't know you wanted to go "dual core", You could have got a 165 for $100 less than your 4800 and most people are OCing them around the 2.7Ghz area, but many are able to get up to 3Ghz.  They also out perform the a64s because they have 1mb of cache instead of 512.
I also would have recommended you stay away from maxtor drives and would have pushed you towards a Seagate.

Ebuyer, the shop i've ordered from only seem to sell the lowerend opterons. If I bought an opteron seperately it means having to wait, and that paying for extra delivery etc.

Doesn't the Athlon 64 4800+ X2 have 1MB of cache for each core? (yep, looks like it I assume you meant L2 cache?)

I only stay away from the cheaper Maxtor drives, the lowerend ones.. Typically I do that with all lowend hard drives.

You'll notice I bought two of them, i'm going to set them up in RAID-0 for the extra speed and it'll add a bit of redundancy incase one of them dies. 


All the parts will be delivered on Monday.  Hurrah!

They look awesome! The DDR Memory from OCZ would last you a long time and is clocked faster than most typical DDR2 memory out there, so you don't really need the AM2 mobo and system. The DFI mobo isn't a excellent overclocker so if you want to OC to the extreme, you should look a GIGABYTE and ASUS but if you are only doing it mildly, the DFI is fine. Hope you save up for another 7900GTX for SLI performance! Opterons only has that boost in L2 cache so it can store more data for processing in situations used by servers. As a home PC and Gaming PC, the A64 X2 4800+ is very sufficient in its trade.

Guess I was still thinking of the single core a64s (512k), forgot the x2s have 1mb.  The opterons still OC leaps and bounds better than the standard a64s.
The only redundancy a raid-0 provides is redundant failure... one drive fails = all data gone.  Raid 1 mirrors the drives and still provides a good speed increase (not as much as raid 0 though).
