Ireland goes to the polls again to vote on the Lisbon Treaty, which aims to consolidate and streamline the fairly unwieldly EU. Can our fellow Europeans give us some guidance on this....

PS Our rejection of the treaty last time meant that we got certain legal assurances and caveats which allayed many of the original bugbears the Irish had with the treaty.

We had alot of issues with this because of the EU court (or wtf its called) they said our immigration laws are too strict, and we can not send people home. (IMO our immigration laws should be stricter)

But thank God our good goverment said screw EU, and went on.

I mean why the flying fk should some French guy sitting in Brussels, dictate us on what to do and not to do?

A big NO from the low countries as well.

The new treaty is basically the same as the rejected EU constitution, they just stripped the flag. As we never had "bugbears", all arguments remain.

Apart from that, anything should be done to limit EU power. FFS, they banned lightbulbs, traditional Dutch childrens'sweets and non straight cucumbers.

Hell fucking no. I love this supposed 'democracy' we live in. If we don't approve what they want, they keep throwing it at us until we do. And it's only because of Ireland we get any say in the matter whatsoever. Hope you're voting Charlie.

I want to vote but I just changed address and was away in Egypt for the last two weeks which means I couldn't get on to the supplemental register in time. The vote is October 2nd.

Everyone always criticises the blatant obvious flaws in "Democracies" in places like Africa and the Middle East and shit. But you have some pretty bad shit here too, and in the US. Just the politicians are better at hiding it, it's just that they need to be because the media and the general populace are abit sharper

In simple terms it's just another step towards creating a European Republic. More power towards Brussels (capital of EU/EU Federal Government) and less power towards sovereign EU states. Not alot of people want that shit, except for, unsurprisingly, certain continental European countries that have always had... lets say, ambitions of a United Europe.

People just wanted a trading bloc and better cooperation within Europe.

Fair enough. That was the comparison I was using already I'm definitely a states rights advocate. It's really surprising to me that so many European nations would be willing to throw away their sovereignty. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

As far as I know only 9 countries are in the euro zone (which means they use the euro)

So not even half of the member countries uses the euro.

I see. I've only been to the Netherlands and Germany where they use the euro. I thought it was more widespread.

I assume the Euro is accepted everywhere though, yes? Or do you have to exchange it in places like GB?
