That's what you get for running a stupid competition.iSnack2.0 fury prompts naming rethink September 30, 2009 - 12:25PM
Kraft Foods is working out how it can change the name of its new iSnack2.0 product, a blend of cream cheese and food icon Vegemite, after a backlash from consumers.
"There's a distinct possibility that we'll be critically evaluating the name," Kraft head of corporate affairs Simon Talbot said in a telephone interview from Melbourne today. "The name isn’t resonating with success or favour."
With about half a million iSnack2.0 jars set to start going on sale today, US-based Kraft is investigating the mechanics of how it could change the name of iSnack2.0, Mr Talbot said. The original Vegemite remains on sale.
Vegemite, a dark, pungent spread made from yeast extract, has been in Australian kitchen cupboards since 1923 and the nation consumes more than 22 million jars each year, says Kraft's Vegemite website. That is about a jar for every person in Australia.
The unveiling of iSnack2.0 on September 26, after a nationwide competition that furnished almost 50,000 suggestions, roused indignation amongst Vegemite lovers, with thousands expressing disapproval on blogs, social networking sites and videos uploaded to YouTube.
Kraft has about 500,000 jars of the iSnack2.0-labelled product in warehouses in Sydney and Melbourne and they will start arriving on supermarket shelves today, Mr Talbot said. That is about two months of supply, he said.
