Hey guys, I'm not particularly tech savvy and I need a new computer (for work and entertainment). I thought I might try building one this time as it is much cheaper than buying prebuilt machines. Here is a list of what I think are important, can you guys give any suggestions/tips as to how I should do this?

Also, what are some reliable but excellent quality parts for:

Motherboard
CPU
Graphics Card
Hard drive
RAM

Anything else?

Cheers.

Budget?
Exact purpose? (eg. light gaming, photoshopping etc)
Any preferred brands? (eg. ATi/Nvidia)

Budget is no more than $1200 AUD. The computer will be used for everything, from browsing to gaming (I'm not expecting to run Crysis on full settings but I want to run most games on high with AA).

Something like that, will run pretty much anything on max, might strugle Enthusiast Crysis, but anything else it'll eat no probs.

Finray, you forgot case, power supply, DVD writer. and I probably would have went with a 275 over the 260.
That list was only of things he thinks was important.

All he asked for really. The GTX275 would push it overbudget, but only by £40, so it's up to him if he can swing that.

Sounds like he has the case and that to me, building his first Pc doesn't mean it is his first PC. I guess only he can clarify.

only a quick throw together, didn't have much time. Also check these locations for possibly better pricing and a easier site to navigate.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help and sorry for neglecting my own thread. Centrecom looks excellent, I might give them a try. Is the Asus M4A785TD-M-EVO AMD Mainboard good?

The M is Micro-ATX, the V is the same price and Full ATX so go that.

You'll also need to check if they ship to NSW. Say they use TNT.

I'm tossing up between getting i7 or a Core 2, I know Core 2 is older, but is there much point forking out more money for the i7? It seems to me that the Core 2 will perform better than the i7 of equal price.

Whatever you do, don't apply thermal paste on the cpu pins.
