Help with GIMP.

Since I've pretty much given up on getting PS, I gave GIMP a try, also since I only need to do a few with my pics.

What help I need is, how to I change the lights, contrast and stuff like that? I'm quite lost.

Gimp is really great and they have a large community and tutorials...
Inkscape is a really cool vector art program...kind of like illustrator...
