My knifing tips:
1. Don't run when there's no one to chase. Save your sprinting for when you have a target.
2. Play a kit that runs well. I prefer medic because you can recover if you screw up and still manage to get away.
3. Don't charge people from the front. That's just stupid.
4. When chasing someone don't bother to try to knife them as they're sprinting. Wait until they stop or when you stop to knife them they'll go right out of range.
5. If you're right on someone's tail hit the knife as soon as you stop sprinting. Waiting only gives them a chance to get away.
6. The UAV is your best friend. Zoom the map all the way in to get the most out of it while trying to knife, especially for people who are looking the other direction.
7. Snipers are the easiest targets. Most of them don't listen to what's happening around them, and focus only on whats in their scope. Just watch out for claymores.
8. If someone turns toward you and dives prone don't immediately go prone. That just puts your head to thier gun. Instead, jump over them, and due to the funky jump physics in this game you can direct your fall to where ever they're not facing. Prone then and knife them.

There are pistols and knives servers. I found one the other day by simply typing 'knives' into the map name.

Of course you get the odd idiot running round using a machine gun etc etc, but I got pistol and knife badges (basic) pretty quickly and easily.

Take care.

i got my basic and veterans in ghost town.. best way to get a knife badge is to not force yourself to get one. just sneak around and you will do fine. this badge is more a matter of luck than skil

pistol and knife servers are against ROE. You could get wiped.

This goes for a lot of BF2, not just knifing but its a skill that doesn't get talked about much.

That skill is knowing what your enemy is aware of. When someone comes into view and turns toward you, expect to die quickly if you arent moving or shooting. For that matter when someone comes into view and they turn towards you, if u immediately move for cover/hop a bit, you will survive and can plan an attack.

Alternatively, if they appear but do not look towards you or do not move at all seemingly in response to you, then you should drop prone and shoot. If you are going for a knife badge, this is also the perfect time to approach them with your knife--they dont notice you. Just make sure u are not approaching dead on or they WILL notice.  People have mentioned it but knifing is all about coming from behind enemy lines or flanking from sides.

People get the impression early on in this game that their enemies notice EVERYTHING quickly and then kill (i think this is because when people DO notice you in this game, they can often kill quickly). As you play the game more though, you start to realize that most people are completely oblivious to you unless u have passed directly ahead of them and seen them respond somehow.

This knowledge is also important for playing against skilled people that notice you fast.  When you spot someone out of the corner of your eye while running between covers, DO NOT LOOK AT THEM. Chances are it will get you to cover slowly, and then they will know you are aware and play more aggressively. Instead just keep running til you have your cover or a better position and then leap out in their direction, go prone, and fire some bursts, they think they are effecticvely sniping an unaware player so they will be slow on the trigger. (sorry this last tip doesnt really even relate to knifing unless you are pretty good or this scenario happens in close quarters).
