You are talking about a soft glow. This is a basic exposure technique that I fully understand champ. The examples you posted are overdone imo. My eyes immediately went to the ghostly appendage in Tazz's shop. It seemed very unnatural to me. My suggestion was to tame it down a little and bring more detail back into the arm. The contrast would would give the image a nice pop imo. To each is own though.

Overall, like I said, I thought it was cool.

There is a really cool program that uses particles to make fire smoke water and other wild stuff
They have a 30 day trial and you can export the whole animation with alpha channels to use in movies
or for stills... as a .png series for transparency

I dropped the first part of CS4 for photographers for those following along..

Remember you do not need to use the dropbox client. You are able to download entire folders at once. Just sign in and navigate to the appropriate folder.
