Yeah, I'd say the media are perpetuating the bullshit way more than the government. The government don't really have much to gain from all of this, the media have millions of pounds/dollars/whatever to gain by having the stories that sell.

I guess at the end of the day, we the population can only blame ourselves.

SARS and Swine Flu didn't happen because warnings were put out and people/governments reacted.

The problem with these things is that if there is a problem and you react quickly and decisively to stop it people moan that it didn't happen. A lot of these stories are bullshit of the highest order (see MMr jabs for details) but people often confuse the successful prevention of a real threat with threat that never existed in the first place.

And if there wasn't mention of these diseases it would be considered a government sponsored cover-up. The irony is of course that apocalyptic visions often originate from the tin foil (anti-government) conspiracy types. That's not fear mongering to them though.

SARS was contained in 2006. That doesnt make it a scam. Swine flu was scary because it was a virus that had just made the crossover to humans. In these stages a virus can be devestating. Still it has killed hundreds of people and is by no means a scam. I dont know enough about the other diseases you have mentioned ( but I am pretty sure ADHD is still around and in pretty high numbers.)

As Kmarion said, if they kept it under wraps people would whinge about a cover up, so they'll never be happy.
