The quiet of the September 11 remembrance was shattered this morning for many when a Coast Guard training exercise in Washington's Potomac River was reported by CNN and other news outlets as an actual attack -- just miles from the Pentagon, where President Obama was speaking.

The false report caused the FAA to ground flights at Reagan National Airport and triggered a back-and-forth with the Coast Guard defending the training exercise and CNN defending itself against critics, including the White House.

CNN that bad in America? I heard CNN international is a lot better. They're quite comparable to the BBC where I am tbh.

I say 90/10 or 95/5 in favor of the coast guard. The media was stupid to jump the gun for a story, but to be fair the coast guard probably should have rethought having a serious drill a couple miles from the pentagon and obama on 9/11...maybe a little bit more in favor of the media after thinking about it; but still mainly the medias fault. I'd expect this from some media, but not CNN.

Coast Guard drill on 9/11: dumb-ass idea
Media Jumping the gun: not surprising

I mean really, who the hell on their right mind plans an attack drill for 9/11. Seriously.

I say mostly Coast Guard's fault for stupid ideas, but the media should try to check things out before reporting. I can;t say I'm surprised though.

They're all dumb-asses tbh.

If the media got a bad tip then it's not entirely their fault, but as objective journalists it is their job to investigate every lead before reporting.

Most of the liberal media in this country is horrible.

The funny thing is, fox is ripped on for their slogan "fair and balanced" because they have  right wing hosts who criticize both left and right extremes.

Fucking liberal left wing douche bags and double standards are killing this country. (Not saying right wing GOP geezers aren't)

That's to be expected since it'd be natural that their best, most honest and most scrupulous journalists go to international (that's where the good stories i.e. prestige are). CNN International are very good. They aren't paticularly biased at all (which, based on what I've seen, is much more than I can say for their domestic counterparts).

Ehhh... You do realize that liberalism is what founded America...

Spark: Yeah that's a good point, but there is some pro-American bias (not much but still a bit) in CNN International. But I think both CNN and Fox world services are much better compared to their local counter parts.

It's funny how Fox is owned by a company that also owns fairly liberal news stations.

PBS isn't bad as far as being bias. Every media outlet has bias to some degree. Even the BBC.

But we aren't talking about bias here. We are talking about checking (and confirming) with local authorities before reporting that an attack is under way in our nations capital.

Funny, seem to remember an awful lot happening under the Republicans.

On topic, seems pretty dumb that the coast guard couldn't confirm to CNN it was am exercise.
Even so, CNN shouldn't have broadcast it.

This is the same organization that ran Larry King re-runs while Iran was rioting.

CNN used to be respectable. Then they started openly competing with Ashton Kutcher for twitter followers.

Everything is biased lol... that's the whole point of journalism.

But ON topic: The media seems to take things a little bit too far... WE DONT KNOW WHATS GOING ON SO WE WILL ASSUME ITS A TERRORIST ATTACK.

Mostly CNN, partly the Coast Guard.  CNN should have checked their facts before hyperventilating and reporting a non-story.  The Coast Guard should have given notice of the exercise so no one would be alarmed.

The Coast Guard should've told CNN and local media organizations about the drill beforehand so that no hysteria would have ensued.

Media. Period.

The USCG is under no requirement to notify anyone they are having an exercise, except for those they must coordinate with for airspace and waterway clearance. Period.

They're under no obligation to do do, however that doesn't mean that on 9/11 of all days it'd be a bad idea to do so. Yes, it's mostly the media's fault, but that's not to say that the Coast Guard couldn't have used some sense. People freaked out when Air Force 1 was flown over New York, why would a boat chase on the Potomac be any different?

Common sense would suggest that they do need to notify the media though.  If you see something that appears to be an attack, wouldn't you report it?

The Coast Guard did absolutely nothing wrong. The only thing that makes September 11th any different from September 12th in this regard is sensationalism of the kind that lowbrow outlets like CNN thrive on.
