omfg, be afraid, be very afraid.

I know I am.

Whadiya think?

Scare mongering? Frightening reality?

In the go-go years of the U.S. housing boom, virtually anybody could get a few hundred thousand dollars to buy a home, and private lenders flooded the market, aggressively pursuing borrowers no matter their means or financial history.

Now the pendulum has swung to the other extreme. Only one lender of consequence remains: the federal government, which undertook one of its earliest and most dramatic rescues of the financial crisis by seizing control a year ago of the two largest mortgage finance companies in the world, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

While this made it possible for many borrowers to keep getting loans and helped protect the housing market from further damage, the government's newly dominant role -- nearly 90 percent of all new home loans are funded or guaranteed by taxpayers -- has far-reaching consequences for prospective homebuyers and taxpayers.

The government has the power to decide who is qualified for a loan and who is not. As a result, many borrowers among both poor and rich are frozen out of the market.

I think in the short future we're going to go back to what started this whole mess as Democrats need to get elected in 2010 and they'll put a carrot out there...

Kinda makes ya wish no one listened to the democrats and their bullshit about how home ownership should be yet another right.

Maybe one day we will get back to a time and place where people actually earn a living instead of deciding they are entitled to one provided by the rest of us.

Hey...  I might believe that healthcare is a right, but home ownership is purely a personal responsibility.  So yeah, I definitely disagree with the Democrats that support the CRA.

Yeah well I am not sure how anyone could state the govt. should provide health care, but has no obligations to the homeless.

Personally I think you should be on your own on both counts. It is the consistant opinion.

It does have obligations for the homeless...  that's where welfare comes in.  Having a place to live at is one thing...  Owning property is another.

Ok ya got me on that point, but only to the opinion that those that can not take care of themsleves should be helped. Everyone else has the "right" to fuck off and move to Europe and leech all they want.

If the welfare system is properly designed (aka - somewhat differently than the way it is now), then the costs of "leeching" are considerably less than the costs of poverty-related crime.

In other words, a certain amount of leeching is preferable to heightened levels of crime.

I said this a long time ago. Everyone ignored it..lol.

Actually even before the crash the government had "touched" most every home and it's loan in some way during a typical 30 year term..

How could the government "seize control" of two corporations it already controlled?

What makes you think Europeans aren't responcible for their own debt?

We don't have state sponcored right to get property in Europe if that's what you think ...

We have just the kind of system you describe lowing, we take care of those that can't take care of themselves ... the rest is more than capable of taking care of their own debt ... big difference is we pay a tad more tax to pay for healthcare at one point will get in return unless we die before we retire from a working career ... easily explained our safetynet if things go wrong is a little big bigger than yours ... or atleast so it seems ...

Our safetynet also includes controlling mechanism to prevent capitalism running totally wild, now it seems those could have been even better while the US totally lacked control or a regulated capitalism ...

I call people that do not contribute to society yet suck the benefits from that society parasites. Are you telling me that in Europe, if you d onot contribute to the funding of healthcare then you have no "right" to it?

It's not like the government (around the world, all the governments that had to bail shit out) had a choice it was either that or let it all fall apart, it would've been fun watching it all fall apart at least for the better long term good but they'd never let that happen

Hence my original post, about moving to Europe

By the way, I loved my time there. I would love to move there. I found the people respectful friendly and proud of their villages. I found the history amazing. I will never forget it.

Investors/back are back and buying up all of the inventory. They rent them out and watch the prices rise. I've been looking for a home for a young couple. It's been tough finding a home for them in their price range. Everytime I find something descent for them I call the agent and find out there is already 5 or 6 offers on the house. Believe it or not it's starting to turn into a sellers market in some price ranges.

I'm sure some of these bankers/investors got assistance from the government and wrote of their losses over the last couple years. Now they are right back to their old habits. Shame really. These kids are starting a life together and they're trying to compete with people who couldn't give a crap about anything but profits and handouts.

They get taken care of, at a minimum level.
Its better than having bums begging at traffic lights, I'm prepared to pay taxes for that.
