I have a curious problem here.
My stepsons have identical laptops, both running Vista 32.
One installed the patch over his BF2 with no problems and is happilly playing.
The other one has had nothing but problems.
Keep in mind, this is from the SAME downloaded patch - it's not like they each d/led a separate one.

The patch seemed to install fine, but when bf2 was launched, all the buttons said things like "BUTTON_Main6", or similar.
it retained the users, but it absolutely could NOT log in.  The internet was working fine to the computer, but BF2 could not log in.
I fiddled with it, and ultimately we removed (uninstalled) BF2 and reinstalled from disc, but have NOT applied the patch.  So, theoretically, we are installing back to where it was previously working.

Now, it appears to not be able to connect to the servers again.  We can't get past the "Retreive Account" phase.
At least he buttons look right...

Short of repeating these steps of remove and reinstall, I'm at a loss.

Anyone got any ideas?

Did you delete your profiles folder in the "my documents"? If not, do it .

thx.
I'll try that.
In addition, I've tried to uninstall it and reinstall, and now it won't uninstall. Gives some .dll error.
So,:
1. it won't uninstall.
2. when you insert the disk, there is not option to 'play'... only 'install'. But when you install it gets 'hung up' and will NOT complete and move on. Seriously, we left it overnight and it never moved on.
3. you can run the bf2 on the computer now... but it can-not connect to the server and retreive an account.

grrr.

Ok then try to delete it with ccleaner, or you can try it manually:

To delete the save files:

1. Open My Documents.
2. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.

To delete the game files (in the default location):

1. Open My Computer.
2. Open the C drive.
3. Open the Program Files folder.
4. Open the EA GAMES folder.
5. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
6. Close all open windows.
7. Right-click on the Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.
to edit the registry and remove Battlefield 2:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Run.
3. Type regedit in the text field.
4. Click File and then choose Export.
5. Name the file Backup and make sure the Export Range is set to All.
6. Click Save; you will now be returned to the Registry Editor window.
7. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
8. Click the plus sign next to Software.
9. Click the plus sign next to DICE.
10. Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
11. Click the plus sign next to Electronic Arts.
12. Right-click and choose Delete on any Battlefield 2 folders.
13. Click the plus sign next to Microsoft.
14. Click the plus sign next to Windows.
15. Click the plus sign next to CurrentVersion.
16. Click the plus sign next to Uninstall.
17. Right-click on the key named {04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B} andchoose Delete.
18. A Confirm Key Delete window will appear, choose Yes.
19. Close the WindowsRegistry Editor.
20. Go to the following folder: C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information (If you cannot find this folder you may have to go to Tools > Folder Settings and click the setting to “SHOW hidden folders.”)
21. Find the folders with the exact same values as the registry keys above and delete them.
22. Empty the recycle bin once more.

I hope it works in this way.

I would suggest after  reinstalling to use this link to download patch 1.5. http://www.bigdownload.com/games/battle … v15-patch/
I had a similar problem, and many more after due to corrupt 1.5 downloads, many different websites host the same corrupt download. Good luck
