And props to the derdevil pilots;

Imagine racing down a canyon towards the terminal wall. Just before impact you release your five thousand gallons of water, which causes your heli to soar, you pivot on the tail rotor and race back for more water.

The men on the line pack 35 pounds of protection gear, excluding shovels or water filled back packs and charge upslope like seige breakers in medival trench warefare. There are few harder men.

My respects $3V3N.

Oh, and since Seven is a firefighter, I've got a question: What do you guys think of the people who ignore evacuation warnings, then come calling later saying they want to be rescued?
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2 … anyon.html
I'm betting (and hoping) it's something along the lines of, "Fuck them. Idiots." That's my stance at least.
I have mixed feelings...

However while on duty, if its feesable without risking the life of other firefighters then yes.

I hate to say it, but the men and women that i'm in charge of are more valuable to me then the retards that refuse evacuation. However I have yet to deal wth the situation of the defending homeowner that says he/she will stay.  Up here in Montucky its a different type of people. (We) say you need to leave, they'll ask if we can help gather up some personal belongings to aid them in leaving.  Which we are glad to do.

Last Year, we stopped it 4 miles from City Limits.

spent two weeks in our BLM Helitac Huey doing spotting.  It was ASWM.

Mad props to any volunteer firefighters out there.

Awesome to see that this great tradition is upheld across the Pacific as well.

BTW Reaper... some places here do have conifers, like about 2km west of where I sit now. Part of the reason our back fence got smoulder'd. At least in America they don't get exploding trees...

Those pictures give me the chills, btw. All too familiar - especially the first one. Will never forget how dark the sky got at 4pm in the middle of summer...

Now don't get me wrong, I think it's a sad thing that people are losing their possessions and sometimes even their lives.

But on the other hand, aren't the people that live there responsible for the fires that become worse every year? Naturally, there would be fires there every year, which is - mostly - a good thing. Some plants need fire to set their seeds free and burned stuff on the ground makes it more fertile. The forest renews itself and makes sure it's only as big as it can be.
Now with humans, they want to keep their property safe. By doing this, they make sure less trees burn than naturally should, which leaves more flammable material every year - the fires keep getting worse.

I really think it's a fight man can't win...

That's what burning-off is for - reducing fuel loads by burning it during low-risk months when it builds up. 'Course, you have to be careful otherwise you could wind up in an awkward situation.

But some parts of the world will be fire prone regardless of circumstances. The entire south east part of this country is one place, California is another (similar climate if I'm not mistaken).

I wouldn't mind knowing what fire preparation techniques are given to the public in off-season over there, as well as how long the mandatory evacuation policy has been in place.

It is. I've seen a couple of forest fire, sort of ran through one two years ago in Greece (about 42 people died). You know you're in da shit, but it is of an unmatched beauty.

There are clearance guides and suggestions, to keep brush back. There are new codes that require leaf protection on raingutters ( yippy me ) in new construction. Imagine a gutter full of dry leaves, right next to the roof line. It catches fire and the ventilation sucks the flames under the roof, which is designed to breathe.

The mandatory evacs are not mandatory. Right now there are some trapped who did leave when told to, requesting helicopter extraction and the authorities are like " ya well, tough shit, we told you to get the fuck out, lol "

The policy is one of 'stay or go'... either you stay to defend your property or you leave - early.

Gutter guards = good. We're getting new ones right now, the upcoming fire season looks like an absolute beast.

When you're right up close to a fire you can't see anything at all except a general red-black glow.

To S3v3N or ATG: So as a follow up question to your reply to Spark - is there any back burning that is conducted in the off season to reduce the level of flammable material/undergrowth? A few weeks ago the Rural Fire Service (ie. the volunteer force) was conducting back burning in the "forrest" areas north of Sydney. It was rather hazy that day.. ><

Haha yeah Spark, we are fucked this year. I've heard that the AVERAGE summer temps will be hiiiigh 30's for Sydney.. and given the amount of rain we had earlier this year, combined with the absolute lack of rain now.. well.. joy.

Props to the firies, and keep safe S3v3N

That is not done much. Environmentalist protest when natural habitats are disturbed, nevermind the irony that we disturb things just by living and nature requires fire. Gross stupidity and mismanagement are the norms.

about 4mil or more for an overpriced mountain home then millions in tax money to protect it even though it is uninsurable in lots of places.  great.

Do you really think a bank is going to lend on a 4mil home without insurance? Do you know what the taxes are on a 4mil home?
