They're good but they don't even compare.

And for fuck sake, when was the last time anyone with a single iota of good-taste listened to Kaiser Chiefs? Like, 5 years ago?

Reading has come to define the meaning of predictable-NME bullshit. Shame.

Silent alarm is astonishingly good, I'll give you that.

And that's what I thought, have you seen the full line up? It's exactly as you said, predictable NME bs. That said, I like some of the band on the bill.

The first year was the only year I even paid attention to the main-stage... second time around I was at the smaller stages listening to (half) decent acts.

The lock-up stage looks good this year, especially on the Sat/Sun. Quite a tasty selection of hardcore making it into that mix of Florence & The Machine-esque scenester drivel, as well. Set Your Goals put on an amazing live show.

When I first heard Bloc Party it reminded me of Clash meets the Cure.  So much potential, but it seems like they really haven't lived up to it.  I sometimes see all those festivals on an HD music channel I have at home...some look fucking amazing, then you look at the line-up and its Dave Matthews Band, Madonna, Amy Winehouse, then like some epic band like the Who.  They end up showing the whole set of DMB and Amy Winehouse (who sounds abso-fucking-lutely horrible live), and 2 songs from the Who

^^^Saw Vampire Weekend as an opener to another band a few years ago.  Great stuff.  I got banned for life from the House Of Blues Anaheim that night

God bless interactive TV.

Was cool watching the lesser-known bands form Glasto, and such - on the BBC's interactive channels.

Reading/Leeds is on interactive too ... but for some reason it's not on Freesat, pretty annoying.

Bloc Party's first album just unleashed the floodgates for a scene of UK indie-rock - really ushered in a new era. For that reason, it is absolutely seminal and classic. Silent Alarm politely booted off the hordes of wanky Manc-based Brit-rock bands and brought in a new 'student generation' sound. In my opinion, every single song on that album is memorable-- and I don't often appraise indie albums. Each and every album since then has felt like their 'difficult second/third/fourth record'. They've become more and more experimental and diverse because they themselves recognise that they'll never touch-upon that epoch-defining sound that they had in Silent Alarm. They were riding on the crest of a wave that broke several years ago, and now they're just back-benched to a comfortable position of festival headlining and chirpy dance-along anthems.

I remember when Silent Alarm first came out though... for all of me and my uber-cool collective of arty hipster indie-boys, it was just the awakening into a whole new stage of music. In some ways, even indirectly, Silent Alarm and the mass of albums that was released during that period have all influenced and given birth to the NME indie-drivel of today. I don't know if it's rose-tinted nostalgia or what, but back then each album just seemed more exciting and progressive. Now I see stuff like Florence & The Machine and shit and I just want to weep. Kings of Leon's original album was another amazing release, too. I remember seeing them at Gloucester Guild Hall that same summer - it's like a venue for 250 people, tops. Really good. Can't say I care much for their 'arena anthem' shit that they're making nowadays. Seem to have lost the dynamic magic in the same way.

Up The Bracket - The Libertines
Original KoL.
Silent Alarm
Original Artic Monkeys
Original Maximo Park
Oh and SHIT, almost forgot- Tokyo Police Club!

There were lots of others but the bands seem to have disappeared into obscurity- just as the scene blossomed, guess they couldn't adapt and keep up afterwards. Stuff like Art Brut, Giant Drag, The Cribs and early Yeah Yeah Yeahs were also on heavy rotation, but seem to have lost their appeal in time and age.

They were all solid albums, each with a very different sound, that just came fast and hard. Pure and unashamed British indie-rock. Was great. Perhaps it was just the age we were all at, very impressionable and seeking to find some form of niche and fraternity. That was a great time to be a little indie-scenekid, though! I'm watching Florence & The Machine now on interactive BBC3 and the contrived, pretentious art-fag shittery of it all makes me want to weep. The hordes of weeping 16 year olds in the audience as well that listen to it as if it's the most profound shit ever. I suppose we've all been there but I'm definitely glad to be on the other side of that bullshit. Fuck this crazy ginger art-school Sloane. Her music is twee puke.

For the sake of fair impartiality and not being a completely judgmental prick, I shall concede that 'Dog Days Are Over' is Florence's only memorable and catchy song. It stands out so much over her other intolerable babble that it almost seems as though it was written and produced by somebody else. It's a good festival anthem, the best thing she has to throw at a crowd undoubtedly.

I don't think it was the age you were, so much as the fact that the last 3-5 years the indie scene has been just amazing.  So much new music is coming out and there really have been great bands that have exploded on the scene, along with the usual low-talent monkeys that ride the coattails of innovative sound.  Think about it: Animal Collective, TV on the Radio, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Dodos, Grizzly Bear, etc.  The list really is too long to actually rattle off, but honestly, its a great time to be a music fan.  It is almost akin to the '60s rock/funk explosion, just with a larger talent pool and way more avenues of hearing it.
