A problem with a fill-and-drain valve inside space shuttle Discovery's aft compartment has scrubbed the Wednesday morning launch attempt for STS-128. The launch team is evaluating the issue and has not set a new launch date and time at this point.

I think it is very unlikely the shuttle would have launched despite the valve problem. It's looking nasty over here.

Most likely NASA weather surveillance. On launch day/night the weather coordinator flies a T-38 and the Shuttle training aircraft to feel out the weather conditions.SplinterStrike wrote:

I saw a Delta II go up at night when they launched Kepler and it was amazing. The Ares V is going to be amazing.
