Fair enough.

Just seems shit to me. I thought it was only crappy Middle Eastern countries that did stuff like that though....

It just seems wrong that there could be a scenario where you sit down for a nice meal and ask for the wine list and they tell you they don't serve alcohol. I'd probably walk out.
I could be way off, but I heard somewhere you can't take your own wine to restaurants in the UK (or at least it's frowned on). True?
Most will have a licence to serve alcohol, and therefore the consumption of alcohol not brought from them would not be allowed. However some particularly Indian's will have a licence allowing the consumption of alcohol but the sale therefore you take your own, a few cans for me when I go lol

It's unusual to be able to do so, except in some Indian and Chinese restaurants.

But I think that's perfectly fair enough. You wouldn't take your own wine to a bar. You wouldn't walk into a restaurant and start eating some food you'd prepared yourself.

Quite a few of the restaurants I go to in France are very much wine oriented. The food is there much as a showcase for the wine. Cave Madeline in Beaune is a nice little spot fitting that description - not very flashy, but tasty food and superb wine.

I like my food and my wine. I am quite happy to spend extortionate amounts of money on wonderful meals out, because they are something I really enjoy. With that in mind, I might have to arrange another trip to Bray.....

WHAT!?!?!?

Restauarants can't serve booze in some states!?!?!? I thought you lived in the US, not the Middle East?

Attitudes to drinking in the US seem strange to me. It's not uncommon for me to have a pint with my lunch at work, whereas I have always gotten the impression that would be SEVERELY frowned upon in the US.

I suppose drinking is just a bigger part of European culture....

I would, I do, and almost everyone I know does. A lot of restaurants charge a 'corkage' fee (about $3 pp), but it means you generally can get a superior, cheaper wine of your specific choice.

I understand the reasoning, but different culture/laws means I think its strange you can't take your own wine.

Bringing your own wine? Seriously, I never heard of such a thing, not even here in Holland (and the Dutch are cheap!). If I had a restaurant and someone would even so much as suggest bringing his own wine, I'd kick him out Ramsay style. Then again if I had a restaurant I wouldn't serve the sour piss many places do.

Bring your own freshly-rolled £50 notes and buy the finest wine. Bringing your own Tesco-brand? Where the fuck do half of you guys eat out? The kebab shop down the road at the bottom of the club-strip?

There was a dumpy strip club near Kent State U in Ohio where you could bring your own beer and they would put it in a cooler for you.  Think they charged 5 bucks per 12 pack or whatever.  Good idea to get people in.  But, all we did was get beyond drunk and fight so....

You walk into a restaurant and ask for a 1992 Penfolds grange that they have been maturing in perfect conditions for the past 17 years, and see if they have some. Maybe you get lucky and can go fork over an easy $2000 for a bottle. Or you can take your own you bought back in 1992 for $50.

I have wines dating back to the 70s, that can be anything up to $2,500 a bottle and if you add the restaurants general mark up, $10,000 for a night out is not something I can afford very often.

Cuuute. Too typically stupid to notice any irony or sarcasm though. You need to resit that Irish SAT test!

Bringing your own wine is a peculiarly Australian tradition, and I find the wine snobbery here pretty weird, there is a limit to just how good a bottle of wine can be.
Why not take your own food in case the chef doesn't cook it the way you like it?

That's a fair comment, Dilbert. France and Australia are absolute wankers for wine, I can understand how there would be some differences in culture and approach.

According to an article I read here (Aus) the height of sophistication is to take your own bottle of wine to a restaurant, and then offer the sommelier a sip to prove to him just what a wine expert you are and help educate the poor soul. In return for your munificence he should then forego the corkage fee.

Bizarre.

That is very fucking weird, part of the attraction of going to a classy restaurant here is to taste and sample their excellent wine list... to take your own in and wag your wine-connoisseur dick in the restauranteur's face seems odd.
