Really?  All my friends that work in the service industry make at least $10/hr.  Maybe the laws are different state-to-state.

Actually now that I think about it one of my bartender friends started at like $7.50/hr, but that was about 5 years ago.

What?  You have to pay minimum wage - you can't pay someone $2.50/hr.  I tip because people are servicing me, not because I'm trying to supplement their income.  I was caught off-guard as far as the whole not-tipping thing in the UK.  You know what else was weird?  Not getting a glass of water at a sit-down restuarant.  I had one place even tell me they didn't have water   Is it not customary for you to get a glass of water when you sit down for a meal?  I don't know, its been a while since I've been over there.
Water was available at the restaurant we went to, including a large pitcher.   However, no refills for soda.  And WTF?  No ice tea?  and to FatherTed below, yes, the tap water was free.

Here they usually give tap water for free, it just varies restaurant to restaurant whether they give it to when you're seated or not.

Fuck %. I don't see why someone serving me a $10 meal deserves any less than someone serving me a $30 meal. I think $5 is a good tip, if you are on top of things like drink refills, etc. then I'll give you $5, maybe a little more if everything is perfect. If you suck you get less than $5. It's only been a couple times that I didn't tip at all.

Here's how I look at it:
$2.50 per hour
Serve 3 people an hour (usually many more)
Say average tip is $3 (I really don't know, but I always see people tip $3 or more)
Thats $11.50 an hour.
I would guess $11.50 is on the low side for most servers, but its still better than minimum wage and not bad considering what you are doing. I've never done it, but I can't see why its worth more than $12 an hour.

Now the chef has just as much responsibility - if not more than the server - for you enjoying your meal. Why is the chef not tipped?

He is, the tip is split between the server, greeter and kitchen staff usually

I'm sure its different place to place, but I've heard the tip is usually split between the server and bus boy. The kitchen staff and greeter being paid a higher hourly wage. This is just what I heard from a few people I know that served for awhile.

Actually, servers don't have to be paid minimum wage because of their tips.  Since tipping is pretty much expected, they are not subject to the standard minimum wage rules.

That's so weird...none of the people I know in the service industry get paid less than minimum wage.  Maybe it's just wonky Cali laws.

Well here at least its split with kitchen staff too, I think the server gets a much higher percentage of it though

This just pisses me off so much.

For the past few years, all my applications to Banks, Jobs and  the sort have always created problems that don't happen to other people.

Why?

Because I have a Belgian passport.

Funny thing is, that shouldn't stop ANYTHING from being processed just the same as a British passport, because BRITS ARE PART OF THE EU.

How many times do I have to shout down the phone at some ignorant bastard asking me for my Visa because I have a Non-UK passport?
It's fucking ridiculous. Banks ask me for my Medical Health Card, bills from where I live, more photo identification.... Just because I don't have a stupid British passport.

You guys seriously need to get your heads out of your asses and realise that you abide by European laws.

Yeah, it's a Cali thing.  What with Cali's higher than average minimum wage, servers can often make a killing in income relative to their level of formal education.  But regardless, for all other States, if initial wages + tips does not meet the recent Federal Minimum wage, the employer is supposed to make up the difference.

Thats so fucked up. Expecting tips, lol. Why don't they just raise the prices and pay people a proper wage. Tipping is for good service or a good meal, not a requirement and as such lots of places don't deserve a thing.

Contrary to the popular belief, the height of intellectual and knowledgeable Englishmen are not found on the help phone line of a bank branch.

It's a common misconception and urban legend surrounding our mainland European counterparts.

That's what he wants you to think, if you honestly think that's the truth - you're retarded. Uzique is a 14 year old school boy with bad acne and aspergers, couple this with an oxford dictionary and thesaurus/synonym search engine and you too could match the second-rate troll attempts.

Inb4 seeing myself in him - do you really think I could have come up with such a great character profile without aid?
