I respect pretty much everyone until I'm given a reason not to. I give elders a slightly wider berth and hear them out regardless (criminals, asshats excluded). Only a clueless, self-righteous, arrogant prick would disrespect someone older and bit more experienced trying to help him/her. Just saw one the other day in the 'felony arrests' section of our local news (among all the other in there)... He won't be rehired next year. As a matter of fact, he'll be lucky just to be free. Funny thing -everyone at work (except him) saw it coming.

If someone doesn't 'respect' you its worth considering why not.
Maybe you commited some cultural faux pas you're not aware of.
Maybe the drooling old codger who has been married X times, built Y businesses and Z houses just can't be arsed to give you the time of day or explain in simple terms why you're an idiot.
Old people particularly get tired and impatient, its worth bearing in mind.
Should you respect old people just because? Probably.
