Michael Phelps broke the 200-meter butterfly world record…and we’re not rolling! Matter of fact, we want an asterisk placed beside it. Matter of fact, we say that an asterisk should be placed by this one and every other world record he has.

But we’re not stopping there. We want an asterisk put by all the world records set since Beijing. Why?…because of these damn “performance-enhancing” special NASA designed polyurethane suits they’re wearing.

Wearing these designer suits is the same as juicing…athletes are doing something that gives certain athletes an unfair advantage over the others. Juicing. And just like the juice was eventually outlawed, so will these suits come January 1, 2010.

And ever since Phelps lost yesterday, he’s become the biggest advocate to get them banned even sooner. His coach is saying Phelps might ban swimming competitions until the swimming governing body straightens this whole mess out.

This is from the man that was one of the few to wear Speedo’s designer LZR Racer swimsuits in the Olympics. 8 Gold Medals and a few world records, all done with the designer suit. You only hear this from him now because they’ve come out with a better suit that he can’t wear because it’s not Speedo, the Arena X-Glide Suit Paul Biedermann wore to beat him.

And they are not just making him faster…over 160 world records have been broken since then. In 32 events in this World Championship competition alone, 20 world records have already been broken. And it ain’t because people are training harder.

It’s the suits! And soon they’ll be banned. But the records…they will stand. Which is why an asterisk needs to go next to them.
I kind of agree with this guy, when Phelps lost to that German guy he was the first one to go about bashing the suit, even-though he used it to win all those medals, it does give u an edge especially if you are a great swimmer it could give you that edge over the other swimmer especially if there are other top notch swimmer who you are looking to beat. It may not help you much but it will help you perform little better, kind of like an aim bot in bf2 its not gonna help you win, or its not gonna help you get the highest score but it will sure make things easier for you or for one to shoot. Not sure if you guys kept up with the story but "Switzerland-based international governing body for the professional swimming world, FINA, says it will ban polyurethane suits starting Jan. 1" "Under the new ban, all swimmers will be required to wear swimming suits made out of either textiles or woven materials"

That announcement drew immediate criticism from U.S. swimming coach Bob Bowman, who coaches swimming star Michael Phelps.
"Well then, they can probably expect Michael not to swim until they've implemented it," source

That was the way it was in the ancient Olympics.

I dunno, to me it just seems like the dick wasn't designed for running naked. At least mine anyway.

Gets in the way.

It looks silly flinging around when I'm running. The Ancient Greeks might have had those ultra-compact aerodynamic penises, it seems modern man doesn't enjoy that luxury.

I think a line needs to be drawn when it comes to technology and athletics. Shoes are altered to make them lighter or softer depending on the need that is true but that's only going to help so much. A suit that alters your body shape to make you faster is a bit over the line I think.

An edge perhaps. And maybe there should be an asterisk. However, Phelps's margin of victory (for the most part) is beyond that small margin. There is some hypocrisy if what this blogger says is true.

It's an interesting argument. Like why is Tiger Woods allowed to get LASIK to improve his performance but baseball players can't take supplements to improve their performance?

Yet its fine in bike racing to have aerodynamic bikes and helmets?

As much as I understand your argument, as long as sports uses equipment (and all sports do), people will be trying to find ways for that equipment to benefit the athlete more or hinder them less. Its inescapable, they even design the swimming pools these days to reduce drag. So imo I say let the suits stay.

Point taken. I still say that a suit altering your body shape is differnt to a helmet designed to reduce drag. It changes your profile sure but not your physical shape.

Swimming is a pretty basic sport that shouldn't require a great deal of equipment.

the real question it seems here, is how much do any external factors (equipment (suits, helmets, etc) or drugs) "unbalance" the playing field? At what point is it more about the external than the actual person's talents?

Performance enhancing equipment is okay imo as long as it's available for all contestants and not only a few ... if NASA designs a über swimsuit they should be obligated to sell it to everyone ...

But this isn't about the results (i.e. 1st-2nd-3rd), this is about the times.

It seems awfully unfair to someone like Spitz, for example (I know that was aages ago but it's the best example) to let these times stand, for example - to me anyway.

Agreed. How many countries are going to be willing to fork out that much money though? You know how much those suits cost? Not to mention the fact that you they're only good for a few races and then you need to get a new one.

At least then it is a choice to spend or not to spend the necessary money to win/improve a record ... if Burkina Faso choose not to that's their choice not mine ...

But then that turns Olympic swimming into the America's Cup - a sport that used to be about competing nations, now is only about which company can spend the most money to design the best boat and hire the best sailors. Hell, even Team New Zealand has sold out now because it can't actually afford to create the boats - even though our sailors make up the majority of the sailors on all teams we can't actually afford them to sail for us. The last America's Cup wasn't Switzerland vs. New Zealand it was a pharmecutical giant vs. a major international airline, (Emerates.)

Okay now I'm just ranting about something irrelevent but you get my point.

Occasionally I make a point.

But look, already it's a no longer a competition in swimming between Michael Phelps and Paul Biedermann but a competition between Speedo and Arena on who can make the best suit.

I believe the very structure of sports is changing into what you mentioned earlier, in the future there will be no national teams or athletes "fighting" for their country's pride and honor ... it will be teams "fighting" for a sponsor and they just happen to be from a specific country ...

Tour de France, Americas Cup etc etc
