To the OP, it wouldn't surprise me in the least. If the GOP wants to have a real chance to take the level of power that the Dems hold now, they are going to have to give the heave-ho to the fundamentalist religious whackjobs that make up much of the party and it's hard line supporters.

don't you realize how hard Ronald Reagan fought to include them? this ain't your daddy's GOP.Agent_Dung_Bomb wrote:

Well Ronald wasn't the messiah that Pubs make him out to be. Best thing they could is give them a one finger salute and a good ol' fashioned boot to the ass.burnzz wrote:

Keeping evangelicals out of the White House is a good idea.
Unfortunately, we'll probably have more of them enter the presidency in the future.

Funny as hell this damned recession actually forced millions of lapsed Christians back into churches and well you know how this is going to end up.Turquoise wrote:

We can't just go straight to atheist we got to get an agnostic first. Can't just make the jump from Christian to atheist without doing agnostic in between.AussieReaper wrote:

Hell, let's go back to basics - someone who doesn't wear their faith on their sleeve.

No, but I'd settle for an Agnostic as Macbeth stated...Turquoise wrote:

if you open your mind too much your brain will fall out.
There is yet to be any credible explanation for the reason behind the invasion, its clear the WMD were a pretext, the OP is as convincing as any other.FEOS wrote:

Well, Brazil is the next largest country after the US (5th largest in terms of both area and population) and they recently had an atheist president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso.Turquoise wrote:

Just like they did in 94 to get power eh? Wait ...Agent_Dung_Bomb wrote:

There's been plenty of credible explanation for the reason(s)...it's just easier for people to believe that Bush went all "Crusader" than to believe he acted on bad information.Dilbert_X wrote:

Which is ludicrous.

Strange that he acted on bogus information in the way he did, when there really was credible intel that other nations with longer histories of real contacts with terrorists DID have WMDs and active nuclear programs whereas Saddam obviously didn't.There's been plenty of credible explanation for the reason(s)...it's just easier for people to believe that Bush went all "Crusader" than to believe he acted on bad information.
Even if he hadn't had any, good or bad, information on WMDs, it was clear he would have created some other pretext.

Actually, I'd argue that the reason why Republicans swept Congress in 94 had less to do with the GOP and more to do with the Democrats. They swung too far left too fast, and the people reacted by electing Republicans to balance out a Democratic president.Stingray24 wrote:

Similarly, Congress was swept by Democrats in 2006 because the Republicans swung too far right too fast.
It's amazing what's "obvious" with the benefit of hindsight.Dilbert_X wrote:

To make an accurate and valid argument, you have to look at the situation THEN. What was known and what was suspected THEN. Doing so with what is known NOW is irrelevant.

But yeah, that's pretty impressive considering how thoroughly Catholic Brazil is. I figured it would be nearly impossible to have an atheist president in a Catholic country.
And people thought it would be impossible to have a Catholic president here. Or a black one.Turquoise wrote:

True, but Brazil is a lot more religious than America. I just find it amazing that they have had an openly atheist commander in chief. It's probably going to be a long time before we have one though.FEOS wrote:

As I said...people said the same thing about Catholic and black Presidents here, as well.Turquoise wrote:

I look forward to the day when colour, religion and even party cease to be relevant in electing the most capable person to do the job.
Then he/she will REALLY be able to get to the bottom of why Bush invaded Iraq
