" The stress of a poor economy and a liberal administration led by a black president are among the causes for the recent rise, the report from the Southern Poverty Law Center says. Conspiracy theories about a secret Mexican plan to reclaim the Southwest are also growing amid the public debate about illegal immigration.

Bart McEntire, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told SPLC researchers that this is the most growth he's seen in more than a decade.

"All it's lacking is a spark," McEntire said in the report. "

I don't know about the "All it's lacking is a spark" bit. As the article stated, the trend appears somewhat similar to the 1990s. We didn't exactly have a revolution in the '90s.

I'm on a couple gun forums. I see complaints, but nothing seriously contemplating anti-government attacks. The same thing goes for the survivalist site I saw, while looking for camping gear reviews.

There is a LOT of talk, but ATM that's all it is...talk.
For a "spark" to get more than the MacVeigh type extremists going, it would need to be a very public and pretty darn extreme act/case.

I'm curious why the rednecks are focused on when the article discusses the whole US. Perhaps it's because it's easy to lampoon them as unintelligent racists blasting cans in the back woods. In truth, the militia member/survivalist guys I've talked to, from the midwest, were no fans of Clinton, Bush, or Obama. They do not feel represented by anyone in government but wouldn't take up arms as long as the politicians just keep squabbling to keep office and don't threaten their freedom.
