Yes I know, I was just wondering if something was happening. I first got the impression he was shouting for his mum and dad for some reason.

This pic is very depressing
I heard that the guy who took tis picture later committed suicide because of his guilt in doing nothing for the child.
ya that don't surprise me. That would be a fucked up thing to see in person.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Carter

Portions of Carter's suicide note read:

"I am depressed ... without phone ... money for rent ... money for child support ... money for debts ... money!!! ... I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners...I have gone to join Ken if I am that lucky."

Kent? a little before my time, but that was when the divisions really went mainstream.

why does mortality so evoke a strong emotional response?

The old one absolutely sucks. Don't know if they worked back when you were in the army (when were you? ) but when we used them they just randomly beeped and were generally annoying to have on. Especialy since they are designed for the old '85 gear and we used '05.

The new simulators apparently are great but we never got to see those. Propably saving them for a war like all the other proper equipment
Sim-u-la-tor?? Did you train indoors for the whole time or did you have to go out sometimes? Did the drill instructors even raise their voices to you or did they ask nicely if you want to get up today? I was in the military back in the day when men were real men and we used skis' winter AND summer... wait wat?

Two separate occasions, the same war.  And people thought the Nazis were bad.

Also, don't click if you've just eaten.
What is happening in the second photo?
First picture is the Nanjing massacre.
The second is a vivisection (disection of a live animal/in this case prisoner of war/civilian) without anaesthetic.  Unit 731.

More than any pictures in the world these two move me the most and happen to me very personal to me.

Sorry for the white areas within the pictures I only just scanned them in work and didnt bother cropping etc as I dont really know how to.

They are of the two people (other than myself) that I bang on about.

Mums wedding 16th September 1991 - I was 15.  I wish I had taken more photo's of Mum before she died but by the time we thought she might die it was too late, I had a digi camera by then but its understandable she didnt want her picture taken.  Mum died 24th Sept 2005.

My Daughter was diagnosed with 'Gastrochisis' on the 20 week scan, from then on we knew how she would be born and what was needed.  She is about 25 mins old in this picture.  Inside the cling film are her bowel/s. large and small intestines, liver and kidney.  When a baby is grown in the womb they form from the back to the front and it kind of seals itself at the belly button.  Gastro* is a defect that dosent seal itself and thus all the insides grow in the womb but outside of the baby.

She had to have the operation to thread it all back in straight after birth, I turned all religious for 2 hours and to my surprise was told the operation was a complete success.  There were other complications in the 6 weeks we spent in SCBU but you look at her now and she is the very same as every other 8 year old girl, except she dosent have a belly button.  Sorry if the picture is a bit graphic for you.  I consider myself a very lucky boy to have her.

Holy hell, it's so amazing what doctors can do. I mean seriously...all of her internal organs grew outside her and they managed to put them back in after 2 hours? So amazing.

It's like laser tag. You wear a kind of west and a helmet 'thing' on top of your regular combat gear and a laser on your gun.
Supposed to simulate getting shot but the pieces of shit never worked properly so they were just an annoyance. (especialy since they weren't designed for the '05 gear we used).

The new KASI is another story though from what I've heard. Works great and fits as well as your normal equipment. Also simulates indirect fire and even vehicles
Not that we ever got to use those of course

edit: excuse the off topic

In a fire fight in a house in Fallujah, although wounded by seven 7.62 mm AK-47 rounds and hit by more than 40 pieces of hot fragmentation from a grenade while using his body to shield an injured fellow Marine, Kasal refused to quit fighting and is credited with saving the lives of several Marines during the U.S. assault on insurgent strongholds in Fallujah in November 2004.

By the time he was carried out of the house by LCpl. Chris Marquez and LCpl. Dan Shaffer, Kasal had lost approximately 60 percent of his blood.

The photograph of Kasal, taken by photographer Lucian Read — blood soaked and still holding his pistol and K-Bar knife — being helped from the building by fellow Marines, has become one of the iconic pictures of the war.
Pretty much sums up going beyond the call of duty. He recieved the Navy Cross for his efforts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_Kasal
