Just passed as an `add-on` to the $106 billion Iraq War Spending Bill - part of $20 billion in `extras`, like this program, Cash for Clunkers.

Source: http://cars.gov/
The process: http://cars.gov/flow-chart.html

  • Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
  • Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify
  • Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
  • Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in
  • You don't need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase

Hmm...lets see its 2009 - 25 = 1984

So if I have a car that is prior to 1984, I've owned that vehicle for more than a year, and then buy/lease a new car that's less than $45,000 I will get $3,500 to $4,500 credit?

I guess since the government owns GM and Chrysler this is way to prop up their stocks.

sounds good to me... Let the scamming begin...

and i'm betting this will only help wealthy people... poor people like myself drive old cars because we have to...
4500 off of a 25,000 dollar car is still 19,000 dollars... Sign me up and i will try and make the payments for as long as i can...
That's the American way right?   On second thought i will keep driving my 96 toyota that is paid off...

Actually Harmor, it must be less than 25 years old.  This means that your vehicle must have been manufactured 1984-2008.  I just found out it is the MPG that may get you.  It is the rated new, combined MPG milage (an average of your hwy and city MPG).  Also, the program looks to come into effect in late July, but has an ending date of 1 November 2009.  I wonder how many bad car loans are about to occur, trying to rush to take advantage of this deal.

I know my wife is all over it to replace her 1998 Ford Explorer (17 MPG combined).

We already have something similar here, about 1 or 2 grand for your old car to buy a brand new car. The thing is, brand new cars are such a waste of money it's still not worth it.

If this passes, I plan on using it.

I'm currently trying to hold together a 1985 Mercedez 190E, which is trying as hard as it can to fall apart under me. Even if the program only gets me $3500, that's still more than I'd ever get trying to sell it. That and I get approx 19 mpg highway, anything would be an improvement.

And believe me, I am by no means rich.

My gf and I both bought cars a couple months ago, we both would've qualified and the program does not apply retroactively.........fucking perfect. I seriously want to kick someone in the face right now.

This is like our scrappage plan ? It's working fine here so far, and it's been in Germany for a while doing great (iirc).

We already have something similar to that here in BC, Canada.

You can scrap your old car and get upwards of 2 grand for a new one. You get more money depending on how much CO2 your current car pumps out and what car your buying. You get a lot more if your buying a hybrid for example.

What's also cool is you can also scrap a car and use the money to buy a bike w/ accessories or even bus/train passes.

Is it really doing fine and great? I mean, I wonder what the figures really are and whether it really is propping up the car industry or not, and whether people really are taking up this offer. I doubt it. Everyone I know at first took interest in the car scrappage scheme, but when they realised it was for buying brand spanking new cars only, everyone was more or less like "fuck that" - because everyone knows that buying a brand new car is a stupid investment, even if 2 grand is knocked off.

Actually I will be American (at least by physical presence and residence) come February. I was going to get my fiancée a Yaris, but we ended up deciding against it.

Which indicators do you rely on in your opinion that this program is an economic failure?

That doesn't make you American...just ask my daughter.

Are you going to be living in the States for a while, or is it just a visit?

Yeah, Mexicans can fuck off just like all other illegals. I have to go through forms and applications, heaps of other paperwork, thousands of dollars in application fees and an ~8 month wait just to get the damn visa to get into the country, and then I have to pay more fees and do more paperwork and fill out more forms to adjust status, and THEN I have to wait two years to become a citizen. But sure. Grant those fuckers amnesty. It's only fair.

So far I've heard "denmarkian" and "scandahoovian", but nothing really ghetto or pejorative. Usually people fall back on making some half-assed comment about pastries.
