I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Johnny Cash's version of Trent Reznor's "Hurt". Many of the lists of top cover songs have that one on the top. Even Reznor said he hasn't listened to his own version since Cash came out with his.
Might just be because Johnny died not too long after it was released so it had an added weight to it.
