Mayor Michael Bloomberg has an ambitious environmental agenda, but it turns out he's running afoul of his own anti-pollution policy.

The Associated Press has found his SUVs idling all over the city, from about 10 minutes to over an hour. In one week, the AP spotted the mayor's Chevrolet Suburbans idling for long periods at least eight times.

The mayor signed a bill earlier this year strengthening the city's anti-idling law. Advocates say it's the toughest law in the nation because it reduces idling times around schools to one minute.

A Bloomberg spokesman says the city is doing its best to reduce idling. The mayor's SUVs are driven by his police detail and are classified as emergency vehicles, so no laws have been broken.

Idling is an integral part of your lifestyle? Park in the shade so you don't have to keep your AC on? Open up a window? Don't drive in a T-shirt in February?

One minute is too little though. During the coldest months over here idling is restricted to 4-5 minutes (methinks), and air quality is a good argument for it. NYC is crowded as hell, so I definitely see the point in restricting idling in order to improve the air you breathe.

It is a little more understandable in cases that involve high profile people (security). I would have to know more about the specifics circumstance they were caught idling before passing judgment.

Environmentalism often saves money in the long run. And don't you want to leave your kids with a world better than what you had?

I rather be able to provide my kids with a better life though my own hard work and not restrict them in the name of any great cause that is irrelevant to me, if they would one day want to take up the mantle of environmentalism fine by me but until then, I would rather my children live without restriction especially to help bunnies and deer. Both of which I hear are delicious.

I've never actually seen that happen. I can't think of a single environmentally-focussed initiative which has enforced a change in lifestyle. Although I can think of plenty of initiatives which were opposed because people thought they would...

Actually I was talking more about being able to go outside without a surgical mask on hot days (which happens in places like Santiago de Chile, where the smog is sometimes so bad that school is canceled) or having any woods left to go hunt rabbits and deer. Being able to have safe drinking water and keep it safe. Being able to take your kids to the great outdoors and actually have something to show them that's not smokestacks and pollution.

If we went completely nuclear we'd see a great reduction in smog and air pollution. If all our vehicles were electric or hydrogen (which some day they will be) then we'd see an even greater reduction. This would all be at pretty little impact to the consumer (now if only these moronic politicians would let us build nuclear plants and reprocessing facilities).

@Aussie those restrictions are usually put in place during droughts because the water needs to be conserved for living purposes, not to keep your damn pink Cadillac and its chrome rims shiny.

I was thinking more, you can't go outside because it's too hot/toxic, schools have to be closed on a monthly basis etc.

If you if enjoy yard work or spending time detailing your vehicle it sure does. However, I believe for the most part environmentalism enhances our lifestyle.. clean beaches to visit, the ability to play sports without needing an oxygen mask. ..etc.

They should set it up like it is in Maryland where one can stop in an area you're not supposed to be parked in (such as a fire hydrant zone) if it's only for a brief moment to load or unload a passenger.

I disagree. People need to park where they are supposed to to unload/load. The exercise won't hurt. That's almost irrelevant in the police case though. They are using the lanes as their own personal parking spot.

It only takes a second to end up with a bike fatality.

Aha, I try and avoid driving in the city. Too much patience and requires alot of quick reflexes. When going to different areas in the city I use the subway ftw. Much faster and cheaper.

I work in the LES(not too far from the ocean) and can find parking spaces that do not require meters without any problems most of the time. Its not as crowded as many other areas in the city. I only went through Chinatown the other day because my father needed something from there.
