The troops are getting upgraded vehicles but not soon enough. IED's are responsible for over 80% of the deaths in Afghanistan.
The new MRAPs are considerably more expensive to maintain than their Humvee counterpart..

The first new MRAPs, to be built by Oshkosh Corp., will reach Afghanistan in October, said Marine Brig. Gen. Michael Brogan, the officer in charge of the program. By March, the Pentagon plans to buy 5,244 MRAPs. Initially, all of the new trucks will be flown to Afghanistan to speed them to troops in combat. It costs $1.4 million to buy, ship and service each truck for one year, significantly more than the cost of a Humvee, which costs less than $200,000

We lost a Lieutenant Colonel to an IED a few days ago. Highest ranking officer to die in action since another Lt. Col was killed on the Falklands.

Must've been quite big too seeing as he was travelling in one of these:

It's getting quite bad out there, already lost 7 guys in like.....just a small amount of days. I think it's even higher for US troops

Yes it is getting bad.. I had to search the syndicates just to get the real picture. I hate the fact that this is just a drive by story here in the states.

why do you think they use so many ied's bro? they cant fight toe to toe. sure they may get a few here and there, but thats way less than an IED.

yeh thats one of the things our forces out there have been crying for since the start of the war, more helos.

As it is we have enough Apaches out there to cover any Chinooks, but not enough Chinooks to actually move troops.

Although i heard the RAF is mobilising a significant part of their force to Afghanistan soon, so who knows.

They are clearing areas and moving on, then the Taliban just move back in.
With only 600 Afghan troops for the whole of Helmand province its inevitable, unless the marines also invade and control the whole of Pakistan for the next 100 years.
