Why does Obama support a guy who tried, basically though an executive order, to extend his presidency?  I would hope we do the same if a president tried to do that by violating our 25th Amendment.

He actually had a referendum and received enough votes to make it happen. It would be different if he had just said, I am president for life.

Really, this issue is more complicated than it seems.

I don't know how their Constitution works, but in the United States it would take 2/3rds of all State legislators to pass an amendment to remove the 25th Amendment (2 terms for a President).

More than that. It takes 2/3 of both houses and 3/4 of state legislatures.

I read in a news article, that I can't find now, that the Honduras constitution only permits a president to have one term and that the consitution has a provision in it that says that any person attempting to change the term limits provision is a traitor. If true, the mere attempt to hold the referendum means Zelaya is a traitor under the constitution.... so if a president violates the constitution in such a manner, and he is removed from office for being a traitor... is that a coup?

Why does the whole frikken world support a guy who did that? The Honduran army upheld their constitution. Just like the US Forces are supposed to do if their CinChief went nutso and declared himself President for Life. I know Zelaya hasn't yet but I do not doubt that it is his plan. With buddies like Castro and Chavez, heroes of democracy that they are, how could he not?

Who the fuck do the OAS think they are? Interfering in an internal Honduran matter? The Honduran courts said Zelaya's 'referendum' was illegal, their congress said this also. The should have just arrested the guy and tried and impeached him. (Or whatever the Honduran equivalent process is)

source

The military removed Zelaya under orders from the Supreme Court and with the support of Congress, which is controlled by Zelaya's Liberal Party — though nearly all members had turned against him. Lawmakers unanimously installed as president congressional leader Roberto Micheletti, who says he will serve out Zelaya's term and oversee November elections to choose a successor.

No it isn't.

At issue was a referendum Zelaya planned to hold the day of the coup, asking voters if they would support a subsequent vote to modify the constitution. Critics feared he would use it to do away with term limits and run again — something Chavez and other Latin American leftist leaders have succeeded in doing. Supporters of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, a conservative U.S. ally, also have proposed extending term limits to allow him to run again.

You are correct.

There is no reason Obama should be in bed with these people.

"This is a moment when the U.S. ought to be on the side of the rule of law, which the Honduran court and Congress upheld. If Washington does not reverse course, it will be one more act of appeasement toward an ambitious and increasingly dangerous dictator."

Chavez, the same thing could be said about him.

The United States should assassinate Hugo Chavez.

But instead, we propped him up when he shat on the constitution of his country.

Well, hopefully, this means Obama will retract his statement against the Honduran government ousting this guy.
