I've seen a lot of newspapers really go downhill over the past 10-20 years, they never used to have celebrity crap in them, except the tabloids.

Pretty sure you'll find the publishers of the crap mags also publish or published other stuff, they have swung towards the dross because its cheap, easy and profitable.

Its a market like drugs, get the lowest 10% hooked and you're made for life.
If they were responsible they wouldn't publish this crap an more than TV stations would be devoting hours of airtime to bloody Michael Jackson.

This is all true.

But what can be done about it? There's no way of controlling this sort of crap and sheeple lap it up. It's even worse than asking the fucking public for their opinions on the news via text message.

I'm not saying something like Michael Jackson dying has no place being covered though, just not like this. A concise volley of facts, then onto another story, that's what it should be - not fucking interviews with devasted fans and a retrospective of his career.

Punch some of the editors in the head is Dilbert_X's solution.

Pretty sure if it were turned off for a week everyone would forget they needed to know what haircut Britney had or which drugs MJ was inserting into which body part and get back to doing and thinking about useful things.

Of course if it reaches the point of civil disobedience it has gone to far. A random gathering in a public place that does not interfere with other people.. who cares? I think people are having a tough time distinguishing between worship and people getting together to have a good time.

lol for the person who got pissy over single gloves, headbands, and leg warmers.
Reminded me of the Wedding Singer..

An alternative is having major news sources that are partially funded by taxes and partially funded by individual donations.

PBS is an American news station that runs like this, and you can see a clear difference in what they cover as opposed to CNN.  The BBC is also pretty good for the same reasons (although they are entirely funded by taxes, right?).

Btw, for the most part, CNN headline news is back to covering the climate bill and economic news.

They do a better job of separating it. There are plenty of mj stories on PBS.. but it does not dominate it, and it's in the arts section. AFAIK Frontline, their primary journalism show, isn't dominated by the MJ news.

I suppose that is the best that can be expected.
